Major Visual Studio Code Update Boosts Development Capabilities
Microsoft has launched Visual Studio Code 1.109, the latest version of its popular code editor. This update introduces several new features and improvements aimed at developers working with agents and multi-environment workflows. Released on February 4, and also called the January 2026 update, it’s available for Windows, Linux, and macOS from the official website. Microsoft says this release makes VS Code a central hub for developing and managing multiple agents across different platforms.
Enhanced Session Management and Agent Features
The new update brings advanced session management tools. Developers can now run multiple agent sessions simultaneously in local, background, and cloud environments, all within a single view. This makes it easier to switch between sessions, monitor progress at a glance, and let agents operate independently. These improvements are designed to streamline complex workflows and improve productivity when working with multiple agents.
Another key addition is the general availability of Agent Skills, which were previously in preview. These allow developers to package specialized abilities or domain knowledge into reusable workflows. Skill folders contain tested instructions for specific tasks, such as API design, testing strategies, or performance tuning. This helps teams build consistent, domain-specific agents that can be deployed across projects with ease.
New Tools for Smarter Coding and Security
Microsoft also introduced Copilot Memory, a preview feature that lets developers store and recall critical information across sessions. When enabled, agents can work more intelligently by accessing stored data, speeding up tasks like code searches and context retrieval. Developers can activate this feature by setting a specific configuration option. Additionally, the update enhances code search with external indexing, making it faster and more efficient.
The update also adds support for Claude Agent, allowing developers to integrate Anthropic’s agent SDK directly into VS Code. Support for MCP apps is included too, enabling the rendering of interactive visualizations within chat environments. Security enhancements include terminal sandboxing, an experimental feature that limits file and network access for commands run by agents, and auto-approval rules that skip confirmation prompts for safe operations. These features aim to make agent workflows more secure and manageable.
Overall, VS Code 1.109 continues to build on previous releases, such as last month’s version 1.108, which introduced support for agent skills. The focus remains on making VS Code a powerful platform for multi-agent development and collaboration.
Additional Improvements for Developers
The update also enhances the user experience in several areas. For chat interactions, streaming improvements now show real-time progress, and support for thinking tokens in Claude models provides better insight into AI reasoning. For coding, developers can customize the appearance of matching brackets using new color themes, making code easier to read.
A new integrated browser feature allows developers to preview and inspect localhost sites directly within VS Code, complete with DevTools and authentication support. This feature is still in preview but offers a convenient way to test web applications without leaving the editor. Terminal commands in chat now display richer details, such as syntax highlighting and current working directories, improving clarity during development.
Other updates include options for customizing sticky scroll behavior and using terminals in restricted environments, along with finalized APIs for controlling input placement and toggle states. Proposed APIs aim to give chat model providers more control through configuration schemas, paving the way for even more flexible integrations.
All these enhancements reflect Microsoft’s ongoing effort to make Visual Studio Code a more versatile and powerful tool for developers working with complex, multi-agent systems across various platforms.
