Chindata and HEC Launch Green AI Data Centers in China

Chindata Group has teamed up with HEC Group to develop cutting-edge AI compute projects in China. Recently, they announced two major collaborations aimed at creating sustainable, high-density digital infrastructure. These projects focus on blending industrial manufacturing, renewable energy, and hyperscale data centers to meet the rising demand for AI technology.

Shaoguan: Building a Green AI Compute Hub

The first project is in Shaoguan, Guangdong Province. Chindata and HEC are working with the local government to create a gigawatt-scale, zero-carbon compute campus. This campus will be built on roughly 132,000 square meters in the Qujiang Economic Development Zone. The initial phase will offer 150 MW of IT capacity, serving as a foundation for future expansion into multi-gigawatt scale facilities.

This initiative includes plans to upgrade the regional power grid, increase access to renewable energy, and develop local electronic materials production. The goal is to support next-generation AI servers and advanced cooling technologies. Overall, this project aims to boost Shaoguan’s digital industry and help it grow into a competitive hyperscale data center hub.

Ulanqab: Pioneering China’s First Green AI Demonstration Zone

The second project is in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia. Chindata and HEC are working with the local government to set up China’s first gigawatt-scale demonstration zone powered directly by dedicated green electricity. This zone adopts an integrated energy, compute, and production model. It combines renewable power generation, energy storage, and AI data centers into a coordinated regional ecosystem.

The project features a low-carbon, AI-ready data center campus that will meet regional energy needs. HEC’s electrode-foil manufacturing facilities will be part of this ecosystem, creating a fully integrated industrial and digital cluster. The idea is to form a closed-loop system where industrial activity drives computing demand, which in turn increases energy use. Using renewable energy helps reduce costs and cut carbon emissions for both manufacturing and digital operations.

Together, these projects highlight a shared strategy. They combine hyperscale compute infrastructure with renewable energy and industrial growth. Ulanqab’s approach emphasizes regional innovation and low-carbon, vertically integrated infrastructure. Both projects aim to position China as a leader in sustainable AI and digital development.
