Amigo AI has raised $11 million in Series A funding as it expands a platform designed to train clinical AI agents that interact directly with patients. The round was led by Madrona with participation from Optum Ventures.

With this new investment, the company has now raised $17 million in total funding, including an earlier seed round co led by General Catalyst and GSV Ventures. The financing arrives as healthcare systems increasingly look for technology that can help manage growing demand for medical services.

New capital supports growth of clinical AI agents

Madrona led the Series A round, joined by Optum Ventures. The funding will support the expansion of Amigo’s platform and continued development of its clinical agent training system, allowing the company to bring its software to a wider range of healthcare providers and use cases.

Demand for technology that can support medical staff has grown as hospitals and clinics face rising workloads and increasing patient demand. Health systems are exploring software that can assist with tasks such as patient intake, triage, and ongoing support while helping teams manage administrative pressure.

Amigo’s approach focuses on agents that can interact with patients directly while operating under strict safety controls. The platform is designed to support healthcare organizations that want to introduce automation carefully without compromising the standards expected in clinical environments.

Healthcare faces a widening workforce gap

The pressure on care systems continues to grow. By 2030, the global healthcare workforce could face a shortage of more than 11 million professionals, according to widely cited projections across the sector.

Digital clinical agents are being explored as one way to help close that gap. These systems may assist medical teams by handling structured interactions with patients, helping providers maintain service levels even as demand increases. At the same time, healthcare requires far higher reliability standards than most industries adopting new technologies.

By managing these workflows, the software helps medical teams focus their time on complex care that requires direct human expertise and clinical judgment.

Amigo is also expanding partnerships with healthcare providers and preparing for larger enterprise deployments across global health systems. As adoption grows, the company aims to support a broader set of clinical workflows and care environments.

Training AI agents through simulated clinical practice

The company’s platform is built around a concept it describes as a digital residency. Each agent is trained across millions of simulated patient scenarios before interacting with real people, allowing the system to encounter a wide range of medical situations before entering real clinical workflows.

The simulations include difficult cases and unusual edge situations that may appear rarely in practice but are important for safe care delivery. Agents continue training until they meet strict safety thresholds before entering real clinical environments.

Multiple agents can also work together through a shared patient context system. This allows healthcare teams to move patients between workflows without losing information, which can be a frequent issue when care is fragmented across systems.

The company reports that its agents have already completed more than three million patient encounters globally during the past six months, with no reported safety incidents. Those interactions span several healthcare providers that are already testing the platform in real clinical environments.

Expanding leadership and medical oversight

As the platform grows, Amigo has also strengthened its clinical leadership. The company recently appointed Dr. Jay Shah, Chief of the Medical Staff at Stanford Health Care, as Chief Medical Advisor, adding additional medical oversight to its development process.

These agents can operate across more than 100 languages and integrate with major electronic health record systems including Epic, Oracle Health and Athenahealth. This allows the platform to function within existing clinical systems rather than requiring hospitals to adopt entirely new infrastructure.

The platform also complies with major healthcare data standards including HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II and GDPR, which are required for handling sensitive medical information.

Investors and earlier backing

The Series A round was led by Madrona with participation from Optum Ventures. Earlier investors include General Catalyst and GSV Ventures, which co led the company’s seed round and supported the early development of the platform.

Together, these investors have supported Amigo’s development of clinical agent training systems designed specifically for patient facing healthcare workflows. The funding gives the company additional resources to continue refining its technology and expanding its presence across healthcare providers.
