Voize Raises $50M Series A for Nursing AI Assistant
Berlin-based voize has closed a $50 million Series A funding round to expand its AI voice assistant for nurses across Europe and into the United States. Balderton Capital led the round, with participation from existing investors HV Capital, Redalpine, Y Combinator, and HPI Ventures.
The funding addresses a problem that costs the healthcare industry billions annually. Nurses spend up to 30% of their shifts on documentation—filling out forms, writing reports, and entering data into computer systems. Across Europe and the US alone, that adds up to more than 5.5 billion hours and $246 billion in labor costs each year.
Turning Speech Into Documentation
Voize’s solution lets nurses speak their observations directly into a smartphone instead of typing them later. The AI processes the spoken information, structures it appropriately, and transfers it into existing documentation systems in real time.
The results are measurable. A study conducted with Berlin’s Charité hospital found that voize saves approximately 30% of documentation time per shift. More than 75,000 nurses across 1,100 facilities in Germany and Austria now use the platform daily.
“Nurses enter the profession to care for people, and leave it because of all the admin work. At voize, we’re building AI that redefines what it means to care, where technology works in the background, and people come first.”
Fabio Schmidberger, co-founder and CEO of Voize
Building AI That Works Where Nurses Work
Unlike many healthcare AI tools that rely on generic large language models like ChatGPT, voize developed its own domain-specific AI trained specifically for nursing workflows. The system recognizes medical terminology, understands regional dialects, and helps non-native speakers overcome language barriers.
Perhaps most notably, voize functions offline. The AI runs locally on smartphones without requiring continuous internet connectivity—a significant advantage in facilities where WiFi coverage can be spotty. This offline capability is rare among voice AI systems and positions voize uniquely for security-sensitive healthcare environments.
All data processing complies with GDPR requirements, keeping sensitive patient information protected and confidential within the facility where it’s recorded.
From Personal Experience to Growing Movement
Brothers Fabio and Marcel Schmidberger founded voize in 2020 alongside Erik Ziegler, all three graduates of the Hasso Plattner Institute in Potsdam. The idea emerged from watching their grandfather enter a nursing home and seeing firsthand how much time caregivers devoted to documentation rather than patient care.
What started as a simple question—”Why can’t this be done by voice?”—has evolved into a company with 50 employees and operations across two countries. Some care facilities now mention voize in their job postings as a workplace benefit, highlighting how the technology has become integral to recruitment and retention efforts.
Scaling Beyond Germany
The fresh capital will fund voize’s expansion into new European markets and its entry into the United States, where nursing shortages have reached historic levels. The company also plans to develop additional AI capabilities tailored to different nursing workflows across hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home healthcare settings.
While voize initially focused on the care sector, the technology has already found applications in other industries. TÜV inspection engineers, for example, now use voize AI for defect documentation, demonstrating the platform’s potential beyond healthcare.
The company’s growth trajectory shows no signs of slowing—adoption has tripled year-over-year as more facilities recognize the impact of giving nurses back the time they need for what matters most: the people in their care.
