RingCentral Adds AI Expert Mahmoud ElAssir to Board of Directors
RingCentral has announced a new addition to its Board of Directors, bringing in Mahmoud ElAssir. His appointment is effective immediately and highlights the company’s focus on AI-driven cloud communications. ElAssir’s extensive experience in technology and AI transformation makes him a valuable asset as RingCentral advances its platform.
Expertise in AI and Cloud Infrastructure
Mahmoud ElAssir has over 20 years of experience leading large-scale technology projects across industries like telecommunications, finance, and healthcare. His background in building mission-critical platforms at a global level gives him a deep understanding of cloud infrastructure, real-time data systems, security, and product engineering.
Currently, ElAssir serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at UnitedHealth Group. There, he manages Group Technology Infrastructure, Platforms, and Services, overseeing more than 8,000 technologists. His team is focused on migrating the company’s systems to the cloud while integrating AI to improve resilience, speed, and automation.
Driving Innovation at UnitedHealth Group
At UnitedHealth, ElAssir is leading efforts to modernize customer engagement platforms supporting thousands of agents and millions of calls annually. His work involves embedding real-time intelligence, automation, and reliability into customer and agent interactions at a massive scale. This experience aligns well with RingCentral’s mission to develop AI-native communication tools.
Prior to his current role, ElAssir held senior positions at Google and Verizon. His leadership in AI, cloud, and platform transformation initiatives has helped power both enterprise and consumer services worldwide. His background in regulated, always-on environments makes him well-suited to guide RingCentral’s growth in AI-powered communications.
Joining RingCentral’s Leadership Team
RingCentral’s CEO, Vlad Shmunis, expressed enthusiasm about ElAssir’s appointment, emphasizing his ability to build AI-enabled platforms at a massive scale. Shmunis highlighted that Mahmoud’s experience in real-time systems and cloud architecture will accelerate RingCentral’s innovation efforts and enhance long-term value for customers.

ElAssir holds a bachelor’s degree in computer and communications engineering from the American University of Beirut. He also serves on advisory boards for Tricentis and Quantum Metric, and is a member of The Peck School’s Board, demonstrating his ongoing engagement in technology and community initiatives.
