Critical Update to Intune Could Block Outdated Apps
Businesses using Microsoft Intune for managing mobile apps need to act fast. Starting January 19, Microsoft will enforce new security rules that could prevent outdated apps from working. This applies to both custom apps wrapped in Intune and popular apps like Outlook and Teams. If these apps aren’t updated, they may be blocked from launching altogether.
What’s Changing in Intune Management?
Intune is a key part of Microsoft’s Modern Workplace strategy. It helps companies secure their data on employee devices, whether they are personal or company-owned. With Intune’s mobile application management (MAM), IT teams can control specific apps, deploy updates, and prevent data leaks without managing the entire device.
However, Microsoft is now tightening security. Starting January 19, only apps that are updated to support the latest security standards will be allowed to run. This change affects iOS and Android apps, especially those integrated with the Intune SDK or wrapped with the App Wrapping Tool. The goal is to boost security and ensure all apps meet current standards.
What Do Enterprises Need to Do?
For Apple users, apps that use the Intune SDK must update to specific versions depending on the development environment. Apps built with Xcode 16 need SDK version 20.8.0 or later, while those built with Xcode 26 should update to 21.1.0 or later. Apps wrapped with the Intune App Wrapping Tool must also update to corresponding new versions to stay compliant. These updates are critical for apps to continue functioning smoothly.
Android users have a slightly simpler process. Once the company’s main app, like the Company Portal, is updated to version 5.0.6726.0 or later, other Android apps will automatically update when they connect to the device. Businesses should remind users to update their apps and ensure that popular tools like Outlook and Teams are running the latest versions.
Admins can also take proactive steps. They can enable settings to block older app versions or warn users if they are running outdated apps. This helps prevent disruptions during work hours. Additionally, monitoring tools in the Intune admin center allow IT teams to see which app versions users are running and take action if needed.
Overall, organizations need to review their app policies and push updates before the deadline. Failing to do so could mean employees are unable to access essential apps, impacting productivity. Staying ahead of these security updates is vital for maintaining smooth operations and keeping data protected.
