AI Advances in Solving Complex Math Challenges

OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-5.2 Pro, is showing significant progress in tackling tough math problems. A recent study by Epoch AI, a nonprofit research group, found that this new version performs better than previous models in solving complex mathematical questions. The results suggest that AI systems are becoming more capable in areas that have traditionally been difficult for them.

GPT-5.2 Pro Outperforms Previous Models

According to the study, GPT-5.2 Pro successfully solved four problems that no other AI had managed to crack before. Out of 13 problems that earlier models could solve, GPT-5.2 Pro managed to solve 11. This means it was able to handle about 31% of the challenges posed by Epoch AI, a noticeable increase from the previous best score of 19%.

Math has long been a challenge for artificial intelligence. Experts have debated why this is the case. Some believe AI systems can’t recognize their own limitations, while others think that because AI is primarily trained on language, it struggles with numbers and abstract concepts. The new results, however, show that AI is improving at solving some of these complex math problems.

Testing AI’s Math Skills Across Different Fields

The Epoch AI experiment tested GPT-5.2 Pro with problems from various branches of mathematics. The goal was to see how well the AI could handle different types of math challenges, from topology to number theory. The results indicate that the AI’s ability to understand and solve these problems is advancing.

One of the problems was contributed by Joel Hass, a math professor at the University of California, Davis. He was impressed with how GPT-5.2 Pro approached his topological problem. Hass noted that the AI used correct reasoning and was able to identify the geometry of a surface described by a polynomial. This shows the AI’s growing capacity to understand complex mathematical structures.

Another problem came from Ken Ono, a number theorist at the University of Virginia. Ono said the AI understood the key idea behind the problem and performed the necessary calculations. However, he also pointed out that, while the AI was good at executing the steps, it lacked some rigor a human PhD student might include. Despite that, the progress is notable and points to a future where AI could assist mathematicians more effectively.

Overall, the study highlights that AI systems like GPT-5.2 Pro are improving in areas that once seemed out of reach. While challenges remain, these advancements are promising for the future of AI in research and problem-solving. As models continue to evolve, they could become valuable tools for mathematicians and scientists tackling some of the hardest questions in their fields.
