AI Startup Raises $21M to Improve English Pronunciation Globally
BoldVoice, an AI-powered platform that helps non-native English speakers improve their pronunciation, has secured $21 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Matrix, with participation from Flybridge, Xfund, Corazon Capital, Alumni Ventures, Umami Capital, and Y Combinator. The company’s growth comes as it hits over $10 million in annual recurring revenue, all with just seven employees. The platform has already been downloaded more than five million times and is used by professionals in over 150 countries. The new funding will support international expansion and the development of more advanced AI coaching features, including proprietary speech recognition models tailored for accented speech.
The Importance of Clear English Communication
English has become the global language of business, with an estimated 70 to 75 percent of English speakers worldwide being non-native. Professionals across the world rely on English for meetings, presentations, and interacting with clients in different regions and time zones. Despite this, pronunciation and clarity remain significant hurdles for many non-native speakers. Research shows that having a foreign accent can impact career growth, with accented speakers being less likely to be promoted. Unfortunately, this issue is often overlooked in traditional professional development programs.
For over a billion non-native English speakers, improving pronunciation can open doors to new opportunities. Clear speech builds confidence and trust in professional settings. Yet, many struggle to find affordable, accessible coaching that addresses their specific pronunciation challenges. This gap is where BoldVoice aims to make a difference, offering personalized, scalable solutions that help users communicate more effectively in a global economy.
How BoldVoice Uses AI for Real-Time Pronunciation Feedback
BoldVoice combines artificial intelligence with expert guidance to help users enhance their speech clarity. The platform allows users to record their voice and receive instant, detailed feedback at the phoneme level. This analysis is powered by proprietary speech models specially trained to detect accents and pronunciation nuances. The platform then pairs this technical feedback with video lessons from professional voice and accent coaches, enabling users to practice daily and track their progress over time.
According to Anada Lakra, co-founder and CEO, AI has revolutionized written communication, but spoken interactions still lag behind. His team is working to change that by providing non-native speakers with a personal voice coach accessible anytime. Ilya Usorov, co-founder and CTO, explains that building accurate speech recognition for accented speech is challenging. General systems often fail to pick up the subtleties of different accents. BoldVoice’s technology is designed specifically to understand and analyze these nuances, delivering precise, actionable feedback in real time.
This approach helps users improve their pronunciation faster and more effectively than traditional methods. The platform’s affordability and on-demand nature make high-quality coaching accessible to people worldwide, especially in markets where professional coaching options are limited or expensive. The company believes that making speech coaching scalable can have a meaningful impact on non-native speakers’ careers and confidence.
With the new funding, BoldVoice plans to expand its reach and continue refining its AI models. The goal is to help more professionals communicate confidently across borders. As English remains the dominant language of international business, tools like BoldVoice are poised to become essential for non-native speakers seeking to improve their spoken communication skills and advance their careers globally.
