Super Apps and Ecosystem Advantages

ByteDance also made significant upgrades to its Doubao AI chatbot in December. The new version can handle tasks like booking tickets and other services through its popular app Douyin, the Chinese equivalent of TikTok. ByteDance even showcased a prototype smartphone with the AI system built-in, aiming to make it a system-level assistant. However, some features were scaled back due to privacy and security concerns raised by rivals, highlighting the delicate balance between innovation and regulation.

Tencent is also betting big on AI agents. During its May 2025 earnings call, Tencent’s President Martin Lau indicated that AI agents could become central to WeChat, China’s most popular messaging app. With over a billion users, WeChat already combines messaging, payments, e-commerce, and various services. Integrating autonomous AI into such a platform could further streamline user interactions and boost engagement.

Overall, China’s advantage lies in its tightly integrated ecosystems. Unlike Western companies that often struggle with fragmented data and stricter privacy rules, Chinese firms benefit from deep integration across their platforms.
