Recently, some rental car companies have started using new AI tech to check for damage. Hertz, a big name in the rental business, introduced a system called UVeye. It’s designed to scan cars after customers return them, looking for dents, scratches, or other damage. The idea is to make the process faster and more precise. But things haven’t gone smoothly.

In April, Hertz announced they were using UVeye at their airport locations. Not long after, customers began to complain. Many said they were charged hundreds of dollars for minor cosmetic issues or even damage that wasn’t there at all. Some described the system as unfair and confusing. The problems got so bad that one Reddit user said they were “done” with Hertz after the scanner flagged damage that wasn’t visible on the car.

Customer Frustration with AI Damage Checks

One customer rented a car from Hertz at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport. When they returned it, UVeye flagged some damage. But upon checking, there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The customer tried to talk to Hertz staff, but no one could help. The employees blamed the AI scanner, and customer support told them they couldn’t do anything about the issue. This left the customer feeling frustrated and helpless.

People are questioning how the AI makes its decisions. Some wonder if reflections, dirt, or shadows on black cars can fool the system into seeing damage that isn’t there. There’s no way for customers to challenge or review the AI’s judgment, which makes the process seem unfair.

Other Rental Companies Using AI Damage Detection

Hertz isn’t alone. Other rental firms are also testing similar AI systems. For example, Sixt, a German car rental company, uses an AI called Car Gate. Customers have reported being fined hundreds of dollars because the system claimed they caused damage. In some cases, the photos used as proof showed damage that existed before the rental started. When customers pointed this out, the fines were eventually canceled.

These stories show a pattern. Many people face difficulties when trying to dispute unfair damage charges. Even though companies say these systems bring “transparency” and “accuracy,” the reality is often different. Customers feel trapped and powerless against automated decisions that are hard to challenge.

The Bigger Picture of AI in Customer Service

Hertz claims their goal with UVeye is to improve the rental experience, making it quicker and more transparent. But whether it actually does that is up for debate. Many argue that these AI systems often cause more harm than good, especially when they make mistakes or flag innocent damages.

This isn’t just about rental cars. It’s part of a larger trend where companies and governments rely more on algorithms to make decisions. Sometimes these automated systems are flawed, and when they are, accountability becomes a problem. Customers can be unfairly penalized or charged, with little recourse.

As AI tools become more common in everyday life, the risk is that people will get caught in a cycle of automated judgments that are hard to challenge. This trend raises questions about fairness, transparency, and the future of customer service when machines start replacing human judgment.
