Apple has quietly increased the starting price of its Mac mini from $599 to $799. The change comes as demand from developers working with local AI tools has led to shortages and depleted stock. The shift reflects a broader trend of rising costs driven by AI hardware needs and supply chain issues.

Discontinuation and Price Increase

Until recently, the Mac mini was considered the most affordable way to get into Apple’s desktop ecosystem. Since its late 2024 M4 refresh, the entry-level model was priced at $599, making it popular among students, developers, and casual users.

However, as of last week, Apple has discontinued the 256GB configuration and made the 512GB model, now priced at $799, the new base option. This means consumers will pay at least $200 more for the same entry-level hardware. Many online stores report backorders into June for the new model.

Why the Price Hike?

Apple’s CEO Tim Cook explained during the recent earnings call that the shortages of both the Mac mini and the Mac Studio are due to unexpectedly high demand, especially from AI workloads. The Mac mini and Mac Studio are now seen as powerful platforms for running local AI models and agent-based tools.

These machines feature large amounts of unified memory accessible to the GPU and Neural Engine on Apple’s M-series chips. For developers managing large language models or AI agents on their own hardware, this memory advantage is significant. It allows for more complex tasks without relying on cloud services.

As demand for these high-memory configurations grows, supply struggles to keep up. Many higher-RAM versions are currently unavailable or backordered. The same memory chips used in Mac minis and Mac Studios are critical components in AI server farms, leading to a supply imbalance that has driven prices higher across the industry.

Supply Chain and Market Impacts

The shortage of high-quality memory chips has been ongoing for over a year. Prices for DRAM and related components have risen sharply, and analysts warn that consumer electronics makers will face increased costs as cloud providers continue to outbid individual buyers for these resources.

Apple has also begun assembling some Mac minis domestically within the United States, which adds to the overall costs. This production shift, combined with chip shortages, may be contributing to the recent price increase rather than supply issues alone.

For consumers, the price hike is a soft change disguised as a product refresh. The previous base model, with 256GB of storage, was often seen as cramped for AI and developer workflows. Moving to 512GB and more RAM offers a more practical starting point for those needs, albeit at a higher cost.

The larger trend shows that Apple, which usually maintains steady prices through chip cycles, has now increased the entry price by about a third in response to AI-driven demand. The Mac mini has shifted from being a budget-friendly option to a more specialized AI workstation, at least temporarily.
