OpenAI has taken a bold step by making ChatGPT the backend for one of the most popular open-source AI projects in history. This move allows millions of users to access and run autonomous AI agents using their existing ChatGPT subscriptions. It marks a significant shift in how AI tools are distributed and used across the industry.

OpenClaw Gains Massive Popularity and Now Uses ChatGPT

OpenClaw, an open-source AI agent framework, has exploded in popularity since its launch in November 2025. Created by Austrian developer Peter Steinberger, it quickly became the fastest-growing project on GitHub, amassing over 346,000 stars within just a few months. More than three million users have adopted it, connecting AI agents to popular messaging apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, and others.

The project manages tasks such as scheduling, emailing, web browsing, and coding, all while keeping data on the user’s local machine. Its background operation and local hosting make it attractive for those concerned about privacy and security. Nvidia’s Jensen Huang even called it “the most popular open-source project in the history of humanity” during a conference in March.

OpenAI Leverages Its ChatGPT Subscription for Distribution

In a surprising move, OpenAI has integrated ChatGPT subscriptions directly into OpenClaw, allowing users to authenticate and pay for the service via their existing ChatGPT Plus accounts. Subscribers can now access GPT-5.4, run autonomous agents, and utilize OpenClaw’s features for just $23 a month. This effectively turns ChatGPT into the authentication layer for a hugely popular open-source project.

While OpenClaw was not originally built by OpenAI, the company has now opened its API and login system to this community-driven project. This strategy could expand ChatGPT’s user base significantly, as OpenClaw’s 3.2 million users can now easily access GPT-5.4 and related features. OpenAI’s move is viewed as an offensive tactic to gain a larger share of the open AI ecosystem, betting that many users will convert to paid subscriptions.

Meanwhile, the decision contrasts sharply with Anthropic’s recent actions. In April, Anthropic blocked Claude Pro and Max subscriptions from being used with third-party AI agent frameworks like OpenClaw. Their concern was cost: autonomous agents generate thousands of API calls daily, making unlimited access financially unsustainable for them. This defensive move aimed to protect their margins but limited user flexibility.

Industry Dynamics and Risks

OpenAI’s strategy indicates a belief in open distribution as a way to grow its ecosystem. By turning ChatGPT into a universal backend, the company is betting that the increased volume of users will offset the higher compute costs. If successful, this could give OpenAI a massive distribution advantage and create a new standard for AI agent deployment.

However, rapid growth and open access come with security risks. In January, a critical vulnerability was discovered that allowed malicious websites to hijack user machines through OpenClaw’s local server. Security audits revealed thousands of exposed instances and compromised API tokens, highlighting the challenges of maintaining safety in such a widespread, open ecosystem.

Despite these risks, the move signifies a shift toward more open AI infrastructure. With major players like OpenAI and Anthropic taking different sides—one opening access and the other restricting it—the industry is heading toward a new landscape of AI distribution and control. OpenClaw’s success illustrates the demand for open tools, even as security concerns remain a pressing challenge.
