Etsy has announced a new way for customers to shop using its app within ChatGPT. This move is part of Etsy’s broader push into artificial intelligence to make shopping more intuitive and personalized. The feature allows users to explore over 100 million listings using natural language, making searches more conversational and less reliant on traditional keywords.

New Shopping Features in ChatGPT

The latest update lets users directly tag @Etsy in their ChatGPT prompts. For example, someone could ask for help finding a Mother’s Day gift under $100 for a gardening enthusiast. ChatGPT then surfaces relevant Etsy listings, which users can browse, compare, and click through to the marketplace for more details or to purchase.

This beta feature aims to go beyond simple keyword searches. Instead of typing “wooden coffee table” and then filtering results, shoppers can describe what they want in natural language. This makes the shopping process more natural and customized, especially for complex gift ideas or specific preferences.

Background and Previous Initiatives

This isn’t Etsy’s first experiment with ChatGPT. Last September, Etsy partnered with OpenAI for an Instant Checkout feature allowing users to buy items directly within the chat interface. However, that initiative ended in March because it didn’t generate the volume of sales Etsy hoped for. Etsy then decided to build a native app within ChatGPT to better serve its customers.

Alongside the new app, Etsy is testing a conversational gift finder on its platform. This feature acts like a personal shopper, guiding users through gift ideas by asking questions and suggesting relevant products. It’s designed to make gift shopping easier and more engaging, especially during busy seasons.

Broader AI Integration and Company Strategy

Etsy’s AI efforts include more than chat features. The platform now offers curated collections powered by AI and provides tools for sellers, such as generating product titles and descriptions or drafting messages to buyers. In 2024, Etsy introduced a “Designed” label to identify AI-generated artwork, promoting transparency as AI art becomes more common.

Etsy’s latest AI push comes shortly after reporting strong first-quarter earnings. The company surpassed revenue expectations with $631 million and saw a 6% increase in gross merchandise sales. For the first time in two years, the number of active buyers grew to 86.6 million, and seller numbers reached 5.6 million. The company also announced the sale of Depop to eBay for $1.2 billion, focusing more on its core marketplace.

Many other companies are also building native apps within ChatGPT, including Angi, SeatGeek, Tubi, and Wix. Developers have been able to create such apps since October, signaling a growing trend of integrating AI-powered tools into everyday services. Etsy’s move reflects its commitment to staying ahead in the AI-driven retail space.
