The case concerns how Apple marketed its Siri features on the iPhone 16, which the company later admitted were not fully ready at launch. Details of the Siri Settlement

The lawsuit, called Landsheft v. Apple, was filed in the Northern District of California in 2024. It accused Apple of false advertising and unfair competition under California law. The company promoted new Siri capabilities that could draw on personal data and perform complex tasks, but these features were delayed or removed after the iPhone 16 launch. Apple did not admit fault in the settlement, but agreed to pay for the misrepresentation.

The settlement will provide compensation to approximately 36 million eligible iPhone owners in the US. Those who bought the iPhone 16 or iPhone 15 Pro models during the specified period will receive a payment. The amount varies depending on the device, with the maximum being $95. The agreement is a way for Apple to close this chapter of legal exposure related to its marketing practices.

What Was Actually Settled

The case focuses specifically on the consumer claims related to false advertising. It does not resolve other ongoing legal issues involving Apple, especially a separate securities-fraud lawsuit brought by shareholders. That shareholder case alleges that Apple made false statements about Siri’s capabilities to boost its stock price before publicly acknowledging delays. Apple is actively defending itself against those claims and has asked for that case to be dismissed.

Many reports initially mixed up the two cases, but the court documents clarify that the $250 million settlement only covers the consumer class action. The securities-fraud case remains active and is separate from this settlement. This distinction matters because the financial risks for Apple are different: payouts to consumers are manageable, but a ruling that Apple lied to investors could have more serious repercussions.

Back in June 2024, Apple announced Apple Intelligence at WWDC, promising a much smarter Siri that could handle personalized queries and control apps more precisely. However, by March 2025, Apple admitted that these features would be delayed indefinitely. The company then pulled the advertising that promoted those capabilities, which is central to the lawsuit’s claims of false marketing.

What the Settlement Means for Apple

By settling without admitting fault, Apple avoids a lengthy trial that could have revealed internal communications about what executives knew. The agreement is structured so that Apple doesn’t have to take responsibility publicly. For the company, this is a common way to handle large consumer lawsuits and limits potential damage.

Importantly, the settlement signals that Apple’s Siri and Apple Intelligence branding now carry a court-recorded acknowledgment that the original marketing claims were disputed. This doesn’t mean the claims are proven false, but it does put some legal weight behind the notion that the features were not as advertised at launch.

Looking ahead, Apple has said that the delayed Siri features will arrive with iOS 27, expected to be announced at this year’s developer conference in June. This suggests that Apple is still committed to delivering the promised intelligent personal assistant, just on a later timeline. The settlement is likely to be seen as a strategic move to avoid more costly litigation while continuing to develop the product.
