Prices for popular gadgets like MacBooks, smartphones, and gaming consoles are climbing, not because they’re getting more advanced, but due to a shortage of essential components. This shift is mainly driven by a surge in demand for memory chips, which are vital for almost all modern electronics.
What’s Causing the Chip Shortage?
The shortage, often called “RAMageddon,” isn’t caused by conflicts or lack of raw materials. Instead, it’s driven by the explosion of artificial intelligence (AI) and the massive data centers needed to support it. These data centers require enormous amounts of high-end memory chips, which have now become a priority for manufacturers.
As a result, companies have diverted production from cheaper components used in everyday devices to high-margin chips for AI. This has limited the supply of memory chips for consumer electronics like smartphones, laptops, and gaming consoles. Analysts estimate that the cost of mainstream laptops could rise by as much as 40% this year, making budget devices harder to afford.
Impact on Prices and Availability
Major brands are already responding by raising prices. Apple increased the starting price of its MacBook Air by £100 and doubled its minimum storage. Microsoft has phased out some lower-end models of its Surface computers, adding hundreds of pounds to the starting cost. Other manufacturers like Dell and Lenovo have followed suit.
The price hikes aren’t limited to computers. Sony increased the price of the PlayStation 5 by £90, and Microsoft raised the price of Xbox consoles. Samsung and other smartphone makers are also planning to raise prices this year. Some companies have even stockpiled chips to buffer against shortages, but the overall supply remains tight.
Will Cheaper Devices Disappear?
Experts believe that affordable gadgets will become scarcer and more expensive. Memory costs can account for nearly a third of the price of budget smartphones and about a quarter of entry-level laptops. As production shifts toward high-end chips, making low-cost devices profitably is becoming more difficult.
One analyst predicts that the sub-$500 PC segment might vanish by 2028. Meanwhile, some companies are adjusting by increasing the entry-level prices or removing cheaper models altogether. This trend suggests that consumers may have fewer budget options in the near future, and the days of snagging a cheap phone or laptop could be over.
Overall, the rise in component costs driven by AI’s growth is reshaping the consumer electronics market. While innovations continue, affordability might take a hit, and the landscape of available gadgets could look very different in the coming years.
