Cambridge-based battery startup Nyobolt has announced a major funding boost, raising $60 million at a valuation of $1 billion. The funding round was led by Symbotic, a robotics company whose warehouse robots already run on Nyobolt’s ultrafast-charging batteries. These batteries are changing the game for warehouse automation and AI infrastructure, offering rapid charging and long-lasting cycles.

Revolutionary Battery Technology for High-Power Applications

Nyobolt’s batteries can charge from zero to 80% in under five minutes and survive over 20,000 charge cycles without degrading. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, which use graphite anodes that limit charging speed, Nyobolt uses a niobium tungsten oxide anode. This allows lithium ions to move much faster, enabling rapid charging without safety concerns or battery wear.

The company combines this innovative chemistry with proprietary cell design and advanced electronics to manage heat and electrical flow. As a result, their batteries can accept a full charge in seconds for small formats or under five minutes for larger ones. They’re optimized for applications that need frequent recharging, unlike electric vehicle batteries designed for less frequent use.

Target Markets: Warehouse Robots and Data Centers

While originally developed for electric vehicles, Nyobolt’s technology now targets physical AI and data center power systems. Warehouse robots are a key market. These robots need quick recharging to stay operational all day, and Nyobolt’s batteries provide the energy capacity and fast charging to keep them running without lengthy downtimes.

Symbotic’s decision to lead the funding round highlights the importance of this technology. Symbotic deploys fleets of autonomous mobile robots across major distribution centers, including Walmart’s logistics network. Previously, these robots relied on ultracapacitors, which charge fast but store less energy. Nyobbolt’s batteries give them six times more energy while maintaining rapid recharge times, increasing productivity significantly.

This focus on high-cycle-life batteries is crucial for markets where equipment charges dozens or even hundreds of times daily. Nyobolt’s technology is designed to meet these demanding needs, making it ideal for continuous industrial operation and AI infrastructure, where quick energy bursts are essential.

Beyond warehouse robots, the company plans to expand into AI data centers. These centers require batteries that can quickly absorb and release energy during grid fluctuations. Nyobolt’s batteries fit perfectly, offering high power density and rapid cycling capabilities.

The company’s growth reflects a broader trend in deep tech, with Cambridge producing multiple unicorns from its research-focused ecosystem. Founded in 2019 by Professor Dame Clare Grey and Sai Shivareddy, Nyobolt has seen its valuation soar as demand for high-power, fast-charging batteries accelerates.

The recent funding round included participation from IQ Capital, Latitude, Scania Invest, and CBMM, alongside Symbotic. Walmart’s significant investments in Symbotic reinforce the commercial potential of Nyobolt’s batteries. Walmart invested $520 million in Symbotic, which now operates systems in more than 42 distribution centers.

Nyobbolt’s ultrafast-charging batteries are a game-changer for industries relying on mobile robots and high-power AI systems. As demand for continuous operation and rapid recharging grows, the company is well-positioned to lead this niche. Its technology not only boosts productivity but also reduces downtime and maintenance costs.
