The MCP Advantage: Will Certification Unlock AI Talent?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) has taken the tech world by storm since its launch in November 2024, with developers and enterprises clamoring to connect large language models with tools and data. Despite its rapid adoption, however, there’s no formal certification of MCP skills offered by Anthropic or any other company. As a result, developers and hiring managers must navigate a patchwork of online courses and informal credentials instead.

Industry observers believe a push toward formal MCP certification is underway, but they also see limits to what certificates can reveal about someone’s ability to work with the technology. A certification would fill the void left by the shortage of people with MCP skills, says Cameron Rimington, founder and CEO of IronPDF. “We already see that there is now a shortage of people who possess MCP skills that we are hiring for,” he notes.

Adnan Masood, chief AI architect at UST, agrees that a certification would be a welcome development. “MCP development skills are rapidly becoming ‘must-have’ in the AI field, and the industry is responding with educational programs to cultivate those skills,” he says. While a standalone, universally recognized MCP certification doesn’t exist yet, it’s almost inevitable if MCP continues its rise.

Amy Mortlock, vice president of marketing at ShadowDragon, believes things are already brewing at Anthropic, the company that launched the MCP standard. “Anthropic is actively hiring roles that focus on MCP documentation, which suggests bigger plans for making the protocol more consistent and adding to it,” she says. Development platforms like Zed, Replit, and Sourcegraph are also integrating MCP, and that kind of momentum usually leads to formal certification programs.

Certification in the Works?

Rimington thinks the first move will come from hyperscale cloud vendors that are deeply invested in how MCP evolves. “I bet the first MCP [certs] will come out of the big three cloud vendors — AWS, Google, and Microsoft,” he says. “They are the providers with the greatest stake in standardizing the way AI systems interact with their systems.”

Mortlock and Rimington agree that the fast-changing landscape will drive a relatively quick cert development process. Both see a certification rolling out within the next 12 to 18 months.

Courses and Certificates: A Patchwork Solution

Until an official or widely accepted certification emerges, developers and hiring managers are turning to a patchwork of courses and training programs to gauge MCP skills. These offerings aren’t standardized, but they’re already serving as a signal of talent in a rapidly growing field.

UST’s Masood says that such courses can provide ambitious developers a leg up. “If someone has invested the time to learn MCP, it shows a level of commitment and dedication to the technology,” he notes.

The Future of MCP Certification

While the future of MCP certification is uncertain, one thing is clear: the fast-changing landscape will continue to drive innovation and growth in the AI field. As the industry responds to the shortage of people with MCP skills, it’s likely that a certification program will emerge to fill the void.

With its rapidly growing user base and increasing adoption, MCP is poised to become a leading standard for connecting large language models with tools and data. As the industry continues to evolve, one thing is certain: certification will play a crucial role in unlocking AI talent and driving innovation forward.
