Asia’s AI Growth Sparks New Data Center Designs

As artificial intelligence adoption accelerates across industries in the Asia Pacific, data centers are under increasing pressure to evolve. Older facilities, originally built for earlier computing needs, are struggling to handle the intense energy and cooling demands of modern AI systems. This shift is prompting a complete rethink of how data centers are designed and operated in the region.

Building Purpose-Built AI Data Centers

By 2030, workloads driven by GPUs could push rack power densities to around 1 megawatt, making small upgrades insufficient. To keep pace, data center operators are turning to purpose-built “AI factories” — facilities designed specifically to meet AI’s demanding needs. These next-generation data centers feature high-capacity power systems, advanced cooling solutions, and modular designs that can scale as technology advances.

Paul Churchill, Vice President of Vertiv Asia, highlights the importance of planning ahead: “Infrastructure leaders need to adopt AI-optimized solutions that combine powerful electrical systems, smarter thermal management, and flexible layouts.” This approach helps ensure data centers can support dense GPU clusters and high-performance computing environments efficiently and reliably.

Addressing Cooling and Power Challenges

As rack densities increase from 40 kW to potentially 250 kW by 2030, traditional air cooling methods are no longer enough. High power densities generate more heat, which can threaten equipment performance and lifespan. To tackle this, Vertiv is developing hybrid cooling systems that combine direct-to-chip liquid cooling with conventional air cooling. These systems are adaptable, energy-efficient, and help maintain consistent temperatures even in the hottest zones.

Power delivery also becomes more complex as AI workloads fluctuate rapidly. Data centers need infrastructure that can respond in real time to changing demands. Innovative power distribution solutions, along with real-time monitoring, help optimize energy use and prevent outages. This ensures high uptime and efficiency, which are critical for AI operations.

Moving Toward Sustainable Data Center Operations

To meet the rising global demand for data center capacity, operators must focus on sustainable and scalable setups. This includes deploying intelligent monitoring tools that manage workloads more efficiently, reduce waste, and extend equipment lifespan. In parts of Southeast Asia where power grids are less stable, resilient infrastructure becomes even more vital.

Adopting AI-optimized infrastructure not only helps meet capacity needs but also supports environmental goals. It allows data centers to operate more efficiently, consuming less energy and reducing their carbon footprint. As Churchill notes, “Our aim is to deliver infrastructure solutions that are both reliable and environmentally friendly, enabling customers to perform at their best while minimizing impact on the planet.”

Overall, Asia’s rapid AI growth is driving a revolution in data center design. Embracing innovative, flexible, and sustainable solutions is key to supporting the region’s digital future.
