As October 14 approaches, Microsoft is under increasing pressure to reconsider its plan to end support for Windows 10. The company has already made some concessions, especially for European users, by extending support for an extra year. But many businesses and consumers outside Europe are wondering why they aren’t getting the same deal. A consumer advocacy group called PIRG is leading a campaign to persuade Microsoft to change its mind.

Why the Push to Keep Windows 10 Alive

Microsoft hoped most users would have already upgraded to Windows 11 by now. However, recent data shows that just under half of Windows users have made the switch. Many are hesitant because Windows 11 needs specific hardware that not all existing PCs can support. This has left a lot of people stuck on Windows 10, which will stop receiving security updates after October 14.

For businesses, Microsoft offers extended support through its Security Updates program. But it’s costly—up to $61 per device in the first year, then doubling in the second and third years. Schools and educational organizations pay less, around $1 to $4 per device over three years. Outside Europe, consumers can pay $30 or earn Microsoft Rewards points to get one more year of updates. European users, however, don’t have to pay or jump through hoops to keep their Windows 10 devices secure for another year.

Pressure from Consumer Groups and Industry Concerns

Nathan Proctor from PIRG says that pressure from their group played a key role in securing the extra year of support for European consumers. They also helped education institutions get some additional support a few years back. But the concern remains that many businesses aren’t getting the same flexibility. Alex Pearce from Softcat, a tech reseller, notes that companies are asking why they didn’t get an extension similar to Europe’s. He worries that as Windows 11 adds more security features, Windows 10 users will fall behind, especially since schools and hospitals often face more cyber threats.

Beyond the software upgrades, there are practical worries too. Proctor points out that many organizations rely on specialized equipment linked to Windows 10, like MRI machines in hospitals. Upgrading all these machines to Windows 11 might be complicated or impossible, raising fears about compatibility and safety. PIRG’s main reasons for pushing for an extension include reducing electronic waste, lowering costs for users, and avoiding major security risks from outdated machines.

What Might Happen After October 14

Many businesses are preparing for potential disruption when Windows 10 support ends. Pearce anticipates that the public sector, which often has tighter budgets, could be hit hardest. Upgrading large numbers of devices quickly isn’t easy or cheap. Proctor remains hopeful that Microsoft might still change course. With a couple of weeks left, he believes enough pressure could persuade the tech giant to offer more support.

As the deadline looms, the debate continues about how best to balance security, costs, and environmental impact. For now, it’s a waiting game to see if Microsoft will extend support or stick to its plan, leaving many users to face the risks of running an unsupported operating system.
