Amazon Axes Stargate Reboot Over Narrow Fan Appeal
Amazon has canceled its Stargate reboot after nearly two years of development. The showrunner, Martin Gero, known for his work on previous Stargate series, crafted a continuation rather than a reboot. Despite that, Amazon’s executives decided the series lacked broad appeal.
The project had cleared major hurdles, including a 20-week writers’ room and preproduction in London. It was slated to bring back legacy characters and respect the franchise’s existing canon. Instead of a fresh reboot, it would have continued the story for longtime fans while still welcoming new viewers.
Amazon’s hesitation boiled down to audience scope. They feared the series would only attract hardcore Stargate fans, a niche group that has supported the franchise for over 30 years but isn’t large enough to justify the investment. That’s a tough pill for sci-fi loyalists who have long endured cancellations and network interference.
The Stargate franchise is a veteran of the genre with roots in a 1994 film and multiple TV series spanning 17 seasons and hundreds of episodes. Its premise—teams exploring planets through alien-built wormholes—has proven durable. Yet, it never reached the mass mainstream success of contemporaries like Star Trek.
Amazon’s decision also reflects broader shifts inside the company. Several executives who championed the Stargate revival have left amid restructuring. New leadership’s programming strategy now favors content with global, wide-ranging appeal. This shift has already killed other high-profile projects.
The cancellation leaves the Stargate universe in limbo. Amazon still holds the rights and reportedly explores other ways to use the IP. But the version fans hoped for, crafted by a franchise insider, is dead. This outcome underscores the ongoing challenge legacy sci-fi shows face: balancing fan service with broad marketability.
Meanwhile, the Stargate fanbase must look elsewhere. The original series and its spin-offs remain available on streaming platforms. For now, the gates remain closed.
