Halo Campaign Evolved Brings Master Chief to PlayStation and Beyond

The original Halo campaign returns, fully rebuilt and ready for modern consoles. Halo: Campaign Evolved launches July 28 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. For the first time, Master Chief officially lands on PlayStation.

This isn’t just a remaster. It’s a ground-up remake of Halo: Combat Evolved, using Unreal Engine 5. Visuals have been overhauled with 4K resolution, advanced lighting, and detailed materials. The game aims to immerse players in a living, breathing world far beyond the 2001 original.

The remake adds new gameplay elements, including weapons and mechanics borrowed from later Halo titles. Most notably, it introduces three new bonus missions under the banner Operation: METEORITE. Set one year before the original story, this arc features Master Chief and Sgt. Johnson infiltrating a Covenant research ship. Expect new locations, enemy types, and classic Halo weapons.

Leaks from the Microsoft Store revealed more surprises before the official announcement. Screenshots showed full-scale space battles, a feature missing from the original game. Players can hijack vehicles and face off against Brutes in expanded combat scenarios. Cosmetic DLC packs—Alpha Halo Armory and Foundry Armory—promise fresh armor and skins, catering to longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The visual upgrade may come at a cost. The original Halo’s clean, tactical gameplay relied on clear sightlines and simple UI. Unreal Engine 5’s effects like volumetric fog and real-time global illumination risk cluttering the battlefield. Developers insist they preserved the core gameplay loop, but the enhanced graphics might challenge players who favor clarity over spectacle.

Microsoft plans early access starting July 23 for Premium and Collector’s Edition buyers. The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass and support cloud play. This release marks a major milestone: Halo is no longer an Xbox-exclusive franchise. Microsoft has confirmed the franchise will continue on PlayStation, hinting at future titles beyond Campaign Evolved.

The timing avoids direct competition with blockbuster releases like GTA 6 in November. Microsoft appears to be laying groundwork to expand Halo’s audience and ecosystem. While multiplayer won’t launch on PlayStation with Campaign Evolved, the move signals a shift in strategy. Console wars are fading—at least when it comes to the Master Chief.
