Microsoft’s C# programming language is gaining ground fast. It’s now the fastest-growing language on Tiobe’s monthly index of programming language popularity. Some experts believe C# could soon surpass Java, which has long been a dominant force in the coding world.

According to the latest Tiobe index, published on November 10, C# holds a rating of 7.65%. That’s a jump of 2.67 percentage points compared to a year ago. With this rapid growth, some think C# might even be named Tiobe’s language of the year for 2025. It won this award last year, and its upward trend suggests it could win again.

What’s Driving C#’s Success?

Tiobe CEO Paul Jansen points out that C# has made significant improvements recently. Both Java and C# have been competing in the same areas for years. Now, C# has removed many of the reasons developers might have avoided it in the past. It’s now cross-platform, meaning it works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. It’s open source, which makes it more accessible and flexible. Plus, it has incorporated all the latest features developers want.

Jansen explains that while Java still dominates in the financial sector, C# is gaining traction in other areas. Currently, the difference between Java and C# ratings is less than one percentage point. Java is still in fourth place with a rating of 8.54%. But C# is closing the gap rapidly.

Microsoft continues to back C# strongly. As their primary language for many projects, C# benefits from ongoing support and development. Although it has never outperformed Java in the Tiobe index, its growth rate suggests it might soon challenge Java’s position.

Other Languages and Trends in the Index

Python remains the most popular programming language overall, with a rating of 23.37%. It has led the Tiobe index for some time, although its growth has slowed recently. Python’s popularity is driven by its ease of use and versatility across data science, machine learning, and web development.

The Tiobe index also includes other languages like C, C++, JavaScript, and Visual Basic. C is rated at 9.68%, C++ at 8.95%, and JavaScript at 3.42%. Interestingly, the Go language, which ranked eighth last month, fell to 11th place with a rating of 1.72%. Its previous rating was 1.92%.

Another index, Pypl, measures language popularity based on how often tutorials are searched on Google. In November, Python also led there with 27.3%. Java followed with 12.47%, and C/C++ had 11.5%. C# ranked seventh on Pypl with a search interest of 3.62%.

Overall, the landscape of programming languages continues to evolve. C#’s rapid growth indicates it’s becoming a serious contender to Java’s long-held dominance. Developers and companies alike are watching these trends carefully as they decide which languages to adopt for future projects.
