The challenge isn’t just language. It’s that aliens could be so different that we don’t even share the same way of understanding the universe.
A new book called Do Aliens Speak Physics? looks into these questions. It asks: if aliens do exist, how might they think? Would their science and math be the same as ours? Or could they have completely different ways of understanding reality? The author, Daniel Whiteson, is a particle physicist from the University of California, Irvine. He’s worked at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider and is a passionate science communicator. He’s also co-authored books about the universe and hosts a science podcast.
Whiteson is fascinated by the idea that physics might not be universal. He explains that he initially wanted to write about how physics might not be the same everywhere. But his son, a science-loving teen, suggested focusing on what happens when aliens arrive. That made the book more concrete and exciting. Illustrator Andy Warner helped bring the ideas to life with drawings of strange aliens and hypothetical scenarios.
Starting with Fictional Scenarios
Whiteson explains he begins each chapter with a fictional story. He wanted to show readers what it might be like if we encountered aliens. This idea came from feedback from a friend who said the book needed concrete examples. Whiteson loves science fiction, so he used it to make complex ideas more relatable.
Writing these scenarios wasn’t easy. He had to come up with believable examples that illustrated the chapter’s concepts. The stories had to be interesting and plausible. Whiteson enjoyed the challenge and found it made the book more engaging. These stories help readers imagine what real first contact might look like and why understanding alien languages could be so tricky.
Can We Really Send a Message They Understand?
One of the most famous efforts to communicate with aliens is the Voyager Golden Record. Created by scientists including Carl Sagan, it was meant to be a message in a bottle for any extraterrestrial beings to find. But Whiteson points out that even humans can’t easily decode such messages.
He did an experiment with students, showing them a picture from the Pioneer plaque. None of them understood what it meant. Whiteson says that’s because our symbols and language are arbitrary and tied to our culture. We try to create universal symbols, but it’s almost impossible to choose ones that only have one meaning. That’s a big problem for communication, whether with aliens or among humans.
Whiteson emphasizes that science has often challenged assumptions. We think physics is universal, but history shows we have to stay open-minded. Our ideas might be wrong or incomplete. The universe could surprise us, and we need to be ready for that.
Is Math Truly a Universal Language?
Many believe math is the best way to talk to aliens. It’s precise and abstract. But Whiteson questions this idea. He asks: what does it really mean to count or use numbers? It turns out that even math might not be as universal as we think.
He shares how his perspective shifted while studying philosophy of science. He realized that many of our assumptions are based on human experience. For example, the idea of a number line is something we invented, not a fundamental truth. Aliens might not think in the same way. They could perceive the universe through relationships or patterns we don’t understand.
Whiteson’s research shows that we should be humble about our assumptions. The universe might not work the way we think. If we want to understand aliens, we might need to expand our ideas beyond numbers and physics as we know them.
In the end, the book highlights how much we still don’t know. First contact might not be as straightforward as sending messages or sharing science. It could require us to rethink everything about language, math, and understanding. And that’s both exciting and a little humbling. We may find that the universe’s greatest mysteries are beyond our current ways of thinking.
