Google is making a big push to bring conversational shopping to its search tools. The company is also turning its AI into a sort of shopping assistant that suggests products, compares prices, and even helps with checkout.

What’s New with AI Mode Shopping

Google announced back in May that it was working on adding shopping features to its AI Mode search. Now, those features are rolling out in the US just in time for the holiday shopping season. The idea is that you can ask the AI for gift ideas, product details, or shopping guides, and it will generate helpful content on the spot. Since it’s AI-based, there’s always a chance it might get some details wrong, so users are encouraged to double-check.

Some of the shopping results will include ads, just like traditional Google searches. However, because this is still in testing, users might see no ads, different ad styles, or some ads might not appear at all. Google also plans to introduce these features to its Gemini app, but for now, sponsored content won’t be shown there.

Introducing Agentic Checkout and Duplex’s Return

One of the more exciting features is called “agentic checkout.” Basically, you can set a price limit for an item, and Google will alert you when it drops to that price. If you want, you can then authorize an automatic purchase using Google Pay. This feature is currently supported at a few stores like Chewy, Wayfair, and some Shopify shops. It’s a handy way to save money without constantly checking prices yourself.

Google is also bringing back Duplex, its AI assistant that can make phone calls for you. While it used to be aimed at booking appointments, now it’s focused on checking product availability in nearby stores. When you search for certain items, you’ll see an option to “Let Google Call,” and the AI will call stores on your behalf. The AI identifies itself during calls and only makes calls during business hours. If stores find these calls annoying, they can opt out.

After the calls, Google will send you a summary via email or text, which can include inventory info from nearby shops. This could lead to more sponsored links or suggestions, but it’s not certain yet. These new shopping tools are rolling out now and should be widely available by the holiday season.

Why These Changes Matter

All these updates show how Google is trying to make online shopping easier and more interactive. Instead of just browsing static pages, users can now have a conversation with AI to find the best deals, get tailored suggestions, and even automate parts of the buying process. It’s a clear step toward smarter, more integrated shopping experiences powered by AI.

While some features are limited to the US for now, Google’s plans suggest they want to expand these tools soon. For shoppers, especially during busy holiday times, these AI enhancements could save time, money, and effort. But it’s always good to remember that AI isn’t perfect—double-checking details is still a smart move.
