How to Manually Update Microsoft Defender on Windows
Microsoft Defender is the built-in security tool included with Windows 10 and Windows 11. It helps protect your PC from malware and viruses. Sometimes, Defender updates don’t work properly through the usual Windows Update process. When that happens, you can manually update Defender to make sure your system stays protected.
Using Windows Security to Update Microsoft Defender
You can update Microsoft Defender directly through the Windows Security app. To do this, open the Start menu and type “Windows Security” into the search box. Click on the Windows Security app that appears in the search results. Once the app opens, look for the “Virus & threat protection” section and click on it.
Within that section, scroll down to find the “Virus & threat protection updates” option. Here, you’ll see the current status of your Defender updates. If an update is available, there will be a button to check for updates. Click it, and Windows will attempt to download and install the latest Defender updates manually. This method is straightforward and works well if your system’s update process is functioning correctly.
Using Windows Update Troubleshooter or Command Line
If Defender still isn’t updating, it might be due to issues with Windows Update. Running the Windows Update troubleshooter can often fix underlying problems. You can access this troubleshooter through Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters. Select “Windows Update” and run the tool. Follow the prompts to resolve common update problems.
Another way to manually update Microsoft Defender is through command line tools. You can use PowerShell to trigger an update. Open PowerShell as an administrator and run the command: Update-MpSignature. This command forces Defender to download the latest signatures and updates. It’s useful if the usual update methods aren’t working or if you prefer using commands.
Keep in mind, manual updates via command line are effective but require some familiarity with PowerShell. If you’re not comfortable with this, sticking to the Windows Security app or troubleshooting Windows Update issues is recommended.
Regularly updating Microsoft Defender is crucial for maintaining your PC’s security. If automatic updates fail, these manual methods ensure your system remains protected against the latest threats. Always check for updates after troubleshooting or system changes to keep your antivirus signatures current.
