Images sit at the center of visual design. They make ideas land faster. They bring early-stage work to life. And when designers can see how images fit within a layout, they make smarter decisions about the overall experience.

But the detailed work takes time. Removing backgrounds, erasing unwanted objects, resizing assets for different screens. These tasks often require jumping between multiple tools, editing images somewhere else, then importing them back. It’s not the smoothest workflow.

Figma wants to fix that. The company just announced three new AI image editing tools: Erase object, Isolate object, and Expand image. There’s also a new toolbar that groups these features alongside existing ones like Remove background and Crop. The idea is simple. Keep designers on the canvas and let them do more without leaving.

Erase and Isolate Object

AI image tools have become remarkably good at generating realistic visuals. But even great outputs need adjustments. Designers still want precise controls to refine what AI creates.

Erase object lets you select any element in an image and remove it entirely. The background fills in automatically. Isolate object works differently. It separates an element so you can move it, edit it, or adjust its lighting and color without touching the rest of the image.

“With Edit image, you can also make additional edits to your images via a text prompt.”

Think about a product shot. Maybe you want the main item to stand out more. You can brighten it while desaturating the background. Or remove distracting elements that pull attention away from what matters. Effects like blur, color correction, and shadow can be applied to isolated objects too.

Expand Image

Adapting visuals across formats has always been tricky. A hero image that looks great on desktop might not work on mobile. Product shots sized for one social platform rarely fit another without awkward cropping.

Expand image solves this by extending the background to fit new aspect ratios. The original content stays intact. No distortion. If you need to turn a square image into a web banner, the tool generates additional background so text can fit without losing visual context. It’s particularly useful for marketing teams working across multiple formats.

All the Tools in One Place

Designers constantly receive logos and product images from different sources. Different formats, different quality levels. Making everything look consistent matters for brand coherence, especially at scale.

Remove background has become one of the most-used AI features in Figma. That popularity helped motivate this broader expansion. The new toolbar makes it easier to find while grouping it with the fresh capabilities.

These tools are available now in Figma Design and Figma Draw. You’ll need a Full seat on a Professional, Organization, or Enterprise plan with AI enabled. Figma says it plans to bring these features to more products on the platform next year.
