Google Meet videoconferencing devices can now join Teams calls
Google and Microsoft have enabled interoperability between their videoconferencing devices, meaning Google Meet users can now join Teams meetings from a Chrome OS-based Google Meet device, while Teams Rooms can do the same for Google Meet calls.
IT admins should be able to see the option in Google Meet console already, while end users can use the feature beginning Feb. 16. The feature will be on by default for Google Meet devices.
Both Google and Microsoft sell a range of screens, cameras, and speakers designed for hybrid remote meetings with in-office and remote colleagues.
The Teams interoperability adds to the range of video call apps that Google Meet users can access from a device, with Zoom and Cisco Webex already interoperable. For Google Meet hardware users that access Teams, some features might not be available, including closed captions, dual screen support and “presenting using HDMI” — the latter is available when accessing Webex and Zoom.
Microsoft Teams Rooms supports a range of video apps from Amazon, Cisco, Zoom, and others.
About half of companies typically support multiple meeting apps, said Irwin Lazar, principal analyst at Metrigy, with Teams, Zoom, Webex, and Meet the most widely used.
This creates practical problems in meeting rooms built around a single platform. “We see a growing preference for one-touch-join systems that allow participants to quickly join a meeting through an in-room touchpad rather than having to plug in a user’s laptop,” he said. “Without native interoperability, a BYOC [bring your own compute] approach creates additional friction and potential for things to go wrong.”
Google’s interoperability announcement helps remove that barrier, Lazar said. “Overall, this is a positive, as it simplifies the ability for those in a meeting room to join multiple different meeting services without having to resort to device switching.”
According to Metrigy’s Workplace Collaboration MetriCast research, 54% of companies plan to increase spending on videoconferencing systems in 2026.
