Google has teamed up with Microsoft to make video calls more flexible. Now, users of Google Meet hardware can join Microsoft Teams meetings directly from their devices. Interoperability Brings New Convenience for Users

Starting February 16, end users will be able to join Teams meetings using Google Meet devices. IT admins may already see the new option in the Google Meet console, and it will be enabled by default for compatible hardware. This feature allows Teams Rooms to connect with Google Meet calls, expanding options for meeting rooms and remote workers alike.

Google and Microsoft both sell various hardware products like screens, cameras, and speakers designed for hybrid meetings. With this interoperability, users can access multiple video call apps from a single device. Google Meet hardware already supported Zoom and Cisco Webex, and now Teams joins that list. This makes it easier to run seamless meetings without switching devices or platforms.

Limitations and Compatibility Details

Some features might not work when using Google Meet hardware to access Teams. For example, closed captions, dual-screen support, and presenting via HDMI could be unavailable. These features are typically available when using Webex or Zoom with the same hardware. It’s a step forward, but not all functionalities are supported yet.

Microsoft Teams Rooms supports a variety of video conferencing apps beyond Google Meet, including Zoom, Cisco, and Amazon Chime. Many companies support multiple platforms to meet different needs, but this can create challenges. Meeting rooms built around a single platform can lead to complications, especially when switching between apps.

Industry analysts highlight that having multiple meeting apps is common, with about half of companies supporting several platforms. This can cause friction in meetings, requiring users to switch devices or manually change settings. One-touch join systems, which let users quickly access meetings via a touchpad, are becoming popular to reduce this hassle.

By enabling native interoperability between Google Meet and Teams, Google helps ease this process. It allows in-room participants to join different services without having to switch devices or face technical issues. This move simplifies hybrid meetings and reduces the chances of technical problems during critical calls.
