Discover Hidden Features in Android 16 You Might Be Missing

If you’re using Android 16 or thinking about upgrading, there’s a good chance you’ll find some neat tricks that aren’t obvious at first glance. Google released this new version this summer, and another update is expected later this fall. With so many changes happening quickly, it can be a bit overwhelming to keep up. But don’t worry — many of these updates are designed to make your phone more useful and easier to use.

Enhanced Quick Settings for Better Control

One of the biggest changes in Android 16 is a subtle upgrade to the Quick Settings menu. This is the panel that appears when you swipe down from the top of your screen. Usually, it shows you quick shortcuts like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or flashlight. Now, you can resize these shortcuts to fit more tiles in the same space. It’s a small tweak but can make a big difference if you like customizing your quick access tools.

The tricky part is that this feature isn’t obvious at first. You need to go into the Edit mode of Quick Settings, then slide your finger along a tile to resize it. Currently, this feature is only available on Google’s Pixel phones. Samsung says it plans to add the same feature to Galaxy devices next year, but for now, Pixel users get the first shot at it. Other Android phones might see this feature later, depending on how heavily their manufacturers customize Android.

New Modes for Better Do Not Disturb Control

Android 16 introduces a more powerful way to manage when your phone makes noise or shows notifications. Instead of just a simple Do Not Disturb setting, you now get “Modes.” These are preset configurations that control your notifications based on different scenarios. For example, you could set up a work mode that only allows messages from work apps and contacts, or a weekend mode that blocks all but urgent alerts.

Setting up these modes takes a little effort at first, but once you do, switching between them is quick. You can access them with just a few taps. Samsung phones have their own version of these modes, called Routines, which are a bit more customizable. These routines can automatically trigger actions, like turning your volume up when you arrive at the office or switching to weekend mode when a calendar event includes the word “vacation.” This automation saves time and helps keep your phone working the way you want without constant adjustments.

Smarter Reminders and Location-Based Alerts

Reminders are supposed to be simple, but they often get complicated. With Android 16, Google added a new system for reminders linked to screenshots on Pixel phones, but it doesn’t support location-based reminders. Samsung, however, has a built-in Reminder app that can do just that. You can create reminders tied to specific places, and your phone will notify you when you arrive or leave those spots.

This feature is handy for errands or appointments. For example, you could set a reminder to pick up milk when you get to the grocery store. Keep in mind, though, that this location-based reminder system only works on Samsung Galaxy phones. If you switch to a different Android device, you won’t be able to access these reminders unless Samsung’s app syncs with other services, which has its limitations.

Overall, Android 16 packs some exciting features that can help you stay organized, control notifications better, and customize your device to suit your lifestyle. While some of these updates are device-specific, many are likely to roll out across other Android phones over time. Exploring these hidden gems can make your smartphone experience smoother and more tailored to your needs, so it’s worth taking the time to discover what’s new.
