Major Telecom Players Push AI-RAN and 6G Forward
One of the biggest stories was Nvidia’s announcement of a global coalition working to build 6G on open, AI-native platforms. Over a dozen top telecom operators and tech firms, including BT Group, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Nokia, SK Telecom, SoftBank, T-Mobile, Cisco, and Booz Allen, committed to this vision. The goal is to develop networks that are smarter, more reliable, and more secure by leveraging artificial intelligence from the ground up.
Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang emphasized the importance of this movement, saying AI is reshaping computing and infrastructure on a massive scale. The company is leading efforts through its membership in the AI-RAN Alliance, which now includes over 130 companies. They also joined initiatives like the US-based OCUDU to speed up open, software-based 6G architectures. Nvidia released open-source tools designed to help operators create smarter, more energy-efficient networks. These include advanced AI models trained on telecom data and guides for building AI-powered network management systems.
Real-World Deployments Signal a Shift in Network Planning
These advancements are not just on paper. Companies like Cassava Technologies are already deploying Nvidia’s blueprints for autonomous, multi-vendor networks in Africa. Meanwhile, NTT DATA is testing similar configurations in Japan to better handle traffic surges after outages. This shows that the industry is moving from prototypes to practical applications in live networks.
In addition, Nokia announced progress in its partnership with Nvidia. The company completed functional tests of its software running on Nvidia’s GPU-accelerated AI-RAN platform. Several operators, including T-Mobile US, Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, and SoftBank, participated in these tests, demonstrating that the industry is making strides toward integrating AI deeply into the core of future networks.
Overall, MWC 2026 made it clear that the era of AI-native networks is here. Major players are not just talking about the future—they are actively building it.
