AI company Sierra has just announced a major funding boost, raising $950 million in a new round led by Tiger Global and GV. This brings the company’s total valuation to over $15 billion. With this capital, Sierra aims to become the global leader in AI-powered customer experiences, competing in a crowded market with other tech giants and startups alike.

Rapid Growth and Market Strategy

Sierra has been quick to showcase its growth, starting with just four design partners a few years ago. Now, it claims to serve more than 40% of the Fortune 50 companies. Its AI agents handle billions of interactions, including tasks like refinancing mortgages, processing insurance claims, managing returns, and supporting nonprofit fundraising efforts. This rapid expansion reflects the strong demand from enterprises eager to implement AI solutions.

Earlier this year, Sierra reported hitting $100 million in annual recurring revenue in late November, and by February, it had climbed to $150 million. The company emphasizes that this growth underscores how urgent businesses are to adopt AI, despite the high costs involved in deploying these systems. The funding will likely support further development and scaling of its platform.

Leadership and Industry Impact

Bret Taylor, Sierra’s founder and chairman, also serves as chairman of OpenAI and was a former co-CEO of Salesforce. He has expressed that the main benefits of enterprise AI are reducing costs and increasing revenues for clients. However, he notes that the initial ramp-up phase can be expensive, as companies invest heavily to see returns.

At a recent TechCrunch event, Uber CTO Praveen Neppalli Naga shared how Uber has already spent heavily on AI tools. He mentioned that about 10% of Uber’s code is now generated automatically by AI, which is significant given Uber’s large engineering team. He also highlighted a project where Uber built a hotel-booking system in six months instead of a year using agentic workflows, showcasing how AI accelerates development.

Expanding AI Capabilities

Sierra is also pushing beyond customer-facing AI agents. In April, it launched Ghostwriter, an “agent as a service” tool that builds custom AI agents based on natural language commands. Users describe what they need, and Ghostwriter creates and deploys a specialized agent automatically. This tool aims to make AI more accessible and flexible for different business needs.

Founder Bret Taylor envisions a future where enterprise software becomes seamless. He argues that many current tools are underused because employees find them complicated. The goal is to create systems that require little to no navigation, making AI an invisible but powerful assistant in everyday work.

With this funding and new product launches, Sierra is positioning itself to lead the enterprise AI race. As more companies adopt AI tools, the competition will likely intensify, but Sierra’s rapid growth suggests it is well on its way to becoming a dominant player in the space.
