QuTwo, a Finnish artificial intelligence company founded by former AMD executive Peter Sarlin, has raised €25 million (about $29 million) in angel funding. This investment values the company at around €325 million, roughly $380 million. The funding marks a significant milestone for QuTwo as it aims to expand its AI and quantum computing efforts across Europe.

What QuTwo Does and Its Vision

QuTwo’s main product is QuTwo OS, an orchestration layer that manages tasks across classical, quantum, and hybrid computing architectures. The company’s goal is to enable enterprises to utilize “quantum-inspired” computing, which uses classical chips to simulate quantum behaviors on more reliable hardware. While the name hints at quantum computing, Sarlin emphasizes that QuTwo is fundamentally an AI company.

Already, QuTwo has generated about $23 million in revenue through partnerships with major clients like Zalando, a retail giant. The company helped Zalando develop AI assistants, showcasing its focus on enterprise AI solutions. Sarlin sees AI as the core of QuTwo’s future, with quantum computing serving as a complementary technology.

Europe’s Growing AI Scene and QuTwo’s Place In It

Europe has seen a surge in AI startups reaching unicorn status, thanks to increased government support and investor interest in regional tech. Recently, former DeepMind researcher David Silver raised over $1 billion for his new AI venture, highlighting Europe’s potential in this space.

Compared to these giants, QuTwo’s valuation and funding round are more modest, but Sarlin believes this allows the company to pursue its long-term roadmap without immediate pressure. He has previously sold his earlier company, Silo AI, to AMD for $665 million, and now aims to build a global AI leader with a long-term perspective.

Sarlin is clear that he prefers a cautious approach, avoiding billion-dollar rounds that could pressure the company to grow too fast. Instead, he values the freedom to focus on innovation and strategic growth over the next five to ten years. He also sees QuTwo’s angel investors as valuable connectors across Europe, potentially opening doors in sectors like automotive, healthcare, and gaming.

Funding Strategy and Future Plans

Until recently, QuTwo was funded through Sarlin’s family office, PostScriptum, which also incubated NestAI—a separate venture Sarlin chairs. Unlike NestAI, which raised over $115 million from Finland’s sovereign fund and Nokia, QuTwo was not actively seeking outside investment until this year.

The company’s soft launch earlier this year generated strong interest, prompting Sarlin to accept angel investment instead of venture capital. He cited the current geopolitical environment in Europe as a factor, with many countries now favoring local tech solutions over U.S.-based providers. This environment offers tailwinds for Finnish-made AI and quantum tech.

With the new funding, QuTwo plans to expand its team, including hiring around 50 scientists across quantum and AI fields. The company recently opened a branch in Sweden and aims to deepen its presence in Europe. Sarlin also notes that the angel investors involved include prominent figures and entrepreneurs from the tech and startup worlds, which could help QuTwo grow its network and opportunities.

Overall, Sarlin’s approach reflects a focus on sustainable, long-term growth. He believes Europe has the talent and potential to lead in advanced AI and quantum computing, and QuTwo aims to be at the forefront of this effort.
