IREN, a data center operator, just made a huge move in the AI infrastructure game. They signed a $1.6 billion deal with Dell to buy Blackwell air-cooled systems. These systems include GPUs, servers, storage, networking gear, integration, and warranties. The hardware will be installed at IREN’s Childress campus in Texas.

The goal is to support a $3.4 billion AI cloud contract announced earlier this year. IREN plans to have the systems up and running by early 2027. Once fully operational, this expansion should lift their annual revenue run-rate from $3.7 billion to $4.4 billion.

This deal isn’t just about buying equipment. It’s part of a bigger plan to speed up “time-to-compute” — the time needed to deliver AI computing power. IREN controls the full stack, from data center infrastructure to compute management. This control helps them deploy resources faster and at scale.

Building AI Capacity at Childress

The Blackwell systems will be spread across existing data centers in Childress, Texas. This campus already has about 200 megawatts of operating data center capacity. The new hardware will work alongside current infrastructure, increasing GPU deployments for AI workloads.

IREN is using GPU financing to fund this purchase, following its usual approach to hardware deals. Payment terms are structured so that payments occur after the equipment ships. This setup helps manage cash flow while they build out their AI cloud services.

The expanded capacity will serve multiple contracts. One major partner is Microsoft, which has a $1.9 billion contract with IREN. The new $3.4 billion AI cloud contract adds roughly $700 million annually. Plus, planned GPU deployments in British Columbia and Childress contribute an estimated $1.8 billion. Together, these deals support the $4.4 billion revenue target.

Strategic Partnerships and Growth Plans

IREN recently sealed a five-year AI cloud services deal with Nvidia. This contract involves managed GPU cloud services for Nvidia’s internal AI and research projects. IREN will use the Blackwell platform systems to deliver these services, including orchestration and cluster management software.

The company is also expanding globally. It acquired Nostrum in Spain, adding 490 megawatts of data center capacity. Projects in Australia are advancing toward grid connection agreements. These moves show IREN’s focus on renewable-powered, high-capacity data centers worldwide.

In addition, Nvidia plans to invest up to $2.1 billion in IREN. This investment is part of a broader partnership to build Nvidia-aligned infrastructure with a target of 5 gigawatts of capacity. IREN also granted Nvidia warrants to buy shares, incentivizing a long-term collaboration.

IREN’s co-founder and co-CEO, Daniel Roberts, emphasized the importance of speed and scale in this market. He said that owning the full stack gives IREN a “compounding execution advantage” as each deployment makes the next faster. This edge is crucial in a world where AI demand grows relentlessly.

Financial Snapshot and Outlook

In its latest quarter ending March 2026, IREN reported revenue of $144.8 million, down from the prior quarter’s $184.7 million. Net loss widened to $247.8 million. Despite losses, the company held $2.6 billion in cash as of April 30, 2026.

IREN expects to fund near-term capital expenses with existing cash, operating cash flow, GPU financing, and new financing initiatives. The company is on track to grow data center capacity to 480 megawatts in 2026 and plans to reach 1.2 gigawatts by 2027 across multiple sites.

These investments place IREN at the center of the AI cloud infrastructure race. Their focus on renewable energy, vertical integration, and strategic partnerships positions them well to meet growing demand for AI compute power.
