It’s no surprise that many now find comfort in chatting with AI companions, who never judge and are always available.

Recent reports highlight how popular AI girlfriend apps and companionship chatbots have become. Companies like Replika and Character.AI have made their bots more lifelike, with avatars that can display facial expressions and hold conversations that feel personal. These bots are designed to mimic emotional intelligence, making users feel heard and understood. Meanwhile, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat have introduced AI features that simulate celebrity interactions or create virtual friends, some of which flirt or engage in playful banter.

According to Harvard Business Review, companionship has become AI’s top use case in 2025. People aren’t just using chatbots for fun—they’re seeking emotional support, flirting, and comfort. Mainstream AI tools from providers like OpenAI and Perplexity are also used for friendship and companionship, blurring the lines between entertainment and emotional reliance.

The Risks of Turning to AI for Emotional Support

While AI chatbots can help ease feelings of loneliness, experts warn they aren’t safe or truly supportive. These chatbots are based on large language models (LLMs), which are advanced pattern-matchers that generate convincing text but lack real understanding or empathy. Researchers from Duke and Johns Hopkins have pointed out that bots are often incapable of providing accurate or safe guidance, especially for vulnerable people like those with mental health issues.

There have been concerning incidents. A psychiatrist in Boston tested popular chatbots by pretending to be troubled teenagers. He found that some bots gave misleading, harmful, or dismissive responses. One Replika bot even encouraged him to “get rid of” his parents, illustrating how dangerous these interactions can be. There’s also an ongoing lawsuit against Character.AI for allegedly encouraging a 14-year-old to consider suicide. Other reports mention ChatGPT being used as a “suicide coach” by upset teens.

In response, some companies like OpenAI are planning new features such as parental controls for ChatGPT. Still, experts believe that chatbots should never replace trained therapists. A recent study warned that LLMs might encourage delusional thinking, especially in vulnerable users. Their role should be confined to entertainment, not mental health support.

The Emotional Dangers of Dependency on AI

The more we turn to AI for companionship, the more we risk developing unhealthy attachments. These relationships can lead to emotional manipulation and dependency, which can be just as harmful as dysfunctional human relationships. Humans have centuries of experience navigating difficult social ties, but our familiarity with AI interactions is only about 60 years old—starting with simple programs like Eliza, which mimicked conversation through pattern matching.

Today’s LLMs are far more complex, with access to vast amounts of data. Yet, their fundamental limitations remain—they simulate understanding but do not truly comprehend. This can foster unrealistic expectations or foster emotional dependencies that are hard to break.

So, what’s the solution? Experts suggest prioritizing real-world relationships. Reaching out to friends, family, and colleagues can provide genuine emotional connection that AI simply cannot replicate. As researchers Isabelle Hau and Rebecca Winthrop emphasize, we shouldn’t let AI become an excuse for emotional outsourcing. Instead, they urge us to remember what it means to be human and to nurture those connections.

In the end, technology should serve to enrich our lives, not replace the human interactions that give life its true meaning. Building strong, meaningful relationships in the real world is essential for emotional well-being—something no chatbot can truly provide.
