FTC Takes Action Against Overhyped AI Detection Claims
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is cracking down on companies that overstate what their AI detection tools can do. Recently, they finalized an order against Workado, LLC, which marketed an AI detector through its website, formerly known as Content at Scale and now called Brandwell. The FTC found that the company claimed their tool could identify AI-generated writing with near-perfect accuracy, but those claims weren’t backed up by solid evidence.
This move comes as concerns grow about the reliability of AI detection tools, especially as AI-generated content becomes more common in schools, newsrooms, and businesses. The FTC pointed out that Workado’s claim of “98% accuracy” was unsupported because the tool was mainly trained on academic writing, not a broad range of texts.
