According to a new report from Gartner Research, nearly 78 million AI PCs will be in use by 2025. That’s about 31% of all computers sold worldwide. The big trend is that AI PCs are expected to take over more than half of the market by 2026. An IDC study says the percentage of AI PCs in use will jump from just 5% in 2023 to a staggering 94% by 2028.

Even with some slowdown caused by tariffs and uncertain markets, Gartner’s Ranjit Atwal sees a bright future. He says many users will buy AI PCs to stay ahead of the game, especially as AI becomes more integrated into everyday devices. Big corporations are already getting AI PCs, but since they only make up a small part of the total market, most growth will come from everyday consumers. One of the key questions now is which processor to choose for these AI PCs. Arm-based laptops are expected to grow more in the consumer space as apps become more compatible. In the business world, x86 processors on Windows will dominate, holding about 71% of the AI laptop market by 2025, with Arm taking around 24%.

What Makes an AI PC Different?

Organizations like to use AI on PCs because it keeps data on the device, which helps with security concerns. Unlike cloud AI, local AI processing keeps sensitive information private. The main features that make AI PCs appealing are personalized work experiences, better data privacy, and improved security against threats. These computers have special processors like NPUs, GPUs, and CPUs designed to speed up AI tasks such as recognizing images or understanding speech.

New AI-specific chips from Intel, AMD, and Qualcomm are expected to flood the market soon, making AI PCs even more powerful. GPUs, which were originally for graphics, also do well with AI tasks like deep learning and generative models. Nvidia’s AI-optimized GPUs are especially popular for AI work. AI features are also built into operating systems like Windows 11, which now includes tools like Copilot, voice recognition, and effects that make editing photos or videos easier. Many apps, like Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, now use AI to help with tasks such as summarizing documents or editing images, often using the device’s AI hardware to speed things up.

The Future of AI PCs and Software

By 2026, nearly 40% of software vendors will focus on creating AI tools specifically for PCs, up from just 2% in 2024. Smaller language models that run directly on devices are also becoming more common. These models are fast, efficient, and keep data private by not needing to send everything to the cloud. Open-source AI frameworks allow companies to build customized AI tools suited for their specific needs without needing permission or external help.

Experts believe AI PCs are more than just a marketing gimmick. They can boost productivity by handling routine tasks like generating content, summarizing meetings, or automating workflows. Lenovo’s Steve Long points out that AI PCs act like personal digital assistants, getting smarter over time and adapting to how users work. They can detect threats in real-time, predict potential failures, and provide a more personalized experience by adjusting to individual preferences and work styles.

Overall, AI PCs are set to transform how we work, create, and stay secure. With faster hardware, smarter software, and a focus on privacy, these devices promise to make everyday computing more efficient, personalized, and safe. As the technology continues to evolve, we can expect AI to become a standard feature in most personal and professional computers.
