Santa Monica will be the first city in the United States to have parking enforcement vehicles equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) technology to spot illegal parking that blocks bike lanes. AI-Enhanced Parking Enforcement Comes to Santa Monica
In April, seven parking enforcement vehicles in Santa Monica will be fitted with Hayden AI’s advanced scanning technology. These cars will patrol the streets and automatically identify vehicles that are parked illegally in bike lanes. The technology already exists on city buses, but this will be the first time it’s used on parking enforcement vehicles for real-time monitoring.
Charley Territo, the chief growth officer at Hayden AI, explained that the goal is to reduce illegal parking and improve safety for cyclists. “The more we can reduce the amount of illegal parking, the safer we can make it for bike riders,” he said. This approach could serve as a model for other cities looking to better enforce bike lane rules without increasing manual patrols.
How the Technology Works and Its Benefits
The AI system uses cameras mounted on enforcement vehicles to scan for vehicles that are parked in bike lanes where they shouldn’t be.
