Anthropic Boosts Claude Code Limits After SpaceX Data Center Deal
Anthropic has announced a significant increase in usage limits for its Claude Code platform. The move comes after sealing a new deal with SpaceX to access the company’s massive data center in Memphis, Tennessee. This partnership aims to support the rising demand for Anthropic’s AI models, especially among professional developers and enterprise users.
New Compute Capacity and Expanded Usage Limits
During a developer conference in San Francisco, Anthropic revealed that the SpaceX deal grants access to over 300 megawatts of new compute power. This is centered around SpaceX’s Colossus 1 supercomputer, which features more than 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, including the latest H100, H200, and GB200 accelerators. The deal will enable Anthropic to double the five-hour usage window for its Pro and Max plan subscribers and remove peak-hour restrictions for Claude Code users.
Additionally, API limits for Anthropic’s Opus models have been raised, allowing for more extensive and demanding AI tasks. These changes are reflected in a recent blog post from the company, highlighting their commitment to scaling up AI capabilities to meet user demand. The increased capacity aims to support more complex workflows and reduce the frustrations many developers have faced with previous restrictions.
Strategic Partnership and Future Plans with SpaceX
The partnership with SpaceX is seen as a major step for Anthropic, giving the company access to a dedicated and powerful compute infrastructure. The focus is on leveraging SpaceX’s Colossus 1 supercomputer, which utilizes dense GPU deployments for high-performance AI training and inference. SpaceX emphasized the supercomputer’s advanced hardware, capable of supporting large-scale AI models and workloads.
Beyond this, Anthropic has expressed interest in developing orbital compute capacity, potentially building multiple gigawatts of satellite-based data centers. This ambitious idea addresses the challenge of training next-generation AI models, which require vast amounts of processing power that often outpace terrestrial infrastructure. It also ties into broader efforts to explore space-based data centers as a solution to compute and cooling limitations on Earth.
The deal may surprise some, especially given Elon Musk’s previous public comments criticizing Anthropic. Musk had previously claimed that Anthropic dislikes Western civilization and shared controversial opinions about the company’s practices. However, his recent statements suggest he’s now impressed with Anthropic’s efforts, highlighting the importance of the partnership in scaling AI technology.
Growing Demand and Industry Impact
Demand for Anthropic’s AI models, especially Claude Code, has surged in recent months. This increase is partly due to users shifting away from OpenAI amid controversies related to military contracts, and partly because of broader adoption of Anthropic’s solutions in professional software development. Many developers are now using these models for complex, multi-agent workflows rather than simple chat tasks.
To cope with this demand, Anthropic has implemented new usage limits during peak times and even experimented with temporarily removing Claude Code from its basic Pro plan. These restrictions have sparked frustration among developers, who rely on these tools for their work. The company has also secured large deals with giants like Microsoft, Google, Amazon, and Nvidia, which will help expand its compute infrastructure over time.
While some of these improvements will take time to fully realize, they position Anthropic to better serve its growing user base and support the development of more advanced AI systems. The partnership with SpaceX and the increased compute capacity are key steps in meeting this rising demand and pushing AI forward into new territory.
