How India Is Quickly Changing the US Smartphone Market
India is making big moves in the US smartphone scene. More phones made in India are now being sold in America, taking market share from traditional Chinese manufacturers. This shift is happening fast and has some big companies like Apple leading the way.
Recently, data shows that Chinese-made smartphones in the US dropped from 61% to just 25% in the second quarter. Meanwhile, phones made in India surged. Apple has been a key part of this change. The company started importing iPhones from India for the US market, and that move has paid off. According to Canalys, Apple is the main driver of this shift. The number of smartphones imported from India to the US increased by 240% compared to last year. Now, 44% of smartphones coming into the US are made in India.
Why Is India Gaining So Much Ground?
Many brands have been building up manufacturing capacity in India over the past decade, especially Chinese companies. They set up local assembly lines to avoid high import taxes and to meet local demand. India is known for fierce price competition, so making phones locally helps keep costs down and prices competitive.
Apple has been ramping up its production capacity in India as part of its “China Plus One” strategy. This means Apple is not relying only on China for manufacturing. The company has been shifting some of its production to India to hedge against geopolitical risks and to tap into India’s growing middle class, which is looking for more premium phones.
What About Other Big Brands?
Apple isn’t the only company moving some of its manufacturing to India. Samsung and Motorola are also increasing their Indian-made supplies for the US market. However, their pace is slower and smaller compared to Apple. Motorola mainly relies on Chinese manufacturing but works with Indian partners like Dixon Technologies. Samsung, on the other hand, mainly produces in Vietnam but has started some assembly in India.
This shift has been influenced by trade tensions, especially during the Trump tariff war, which prompted many companies to diversify their manufacturing locations. As a result, many Indian-made iPhones have been sent to Europe as well, especially in recent years.
Interestingly, Apple recently announced plans to close its store in Dalian, China, which might be a sign of slowing retail sales there. Despite this, Apple plans to open new stores in China soon. This all shows how Apple is trying to balance manufacturing in different regions as it prepares for new products, like the upcoming iPhone Fold.
Meanwhile, Apple is investing in the future of manufacturing in the US. On August 19, the company will open its Advanced Manufacturing Academy. This new center aims to help American companies adopt advanced manufacturing techniques, including artificial intelligence and smart factory tech.
In the bigger picture, India is becoming a key player in global smartphone manufacturing. Countries like Europe are also seeing more Indian-made iPhones, especially since recent trade tensions and tariffs encouraged companies to diversify their supply chains. The shift is still unfolding, but it’s clear that India’s role in the global smartphone market is only going to grow.
