AWS has launched a new feature called Kiro Powers for its AI-based Kiro IDE. What Are Kiro Powers?
Kiro Powers are designed to enhance the capabilities of Kiro agents. They let developers add specialized tools and research resources with just a click. These powers include access to MCP servers, which provide specific tools needed for different projects, and steering files that follow best practices for development. They also support hooks that trigger actions based on IDE events or commands, making workflows more dynamic and automated.
This setup helps developers customize their environment for a wide range of tasks. Whether working on user interfaces, backend systems, APIs, managing AI agents, deploying code, or monitoring performance, Kiro Powers offer a flexible way to tailor the development process. This means less time setting up tools and more time focusing on building software.

A typical Kiro Power bundle includes a POWER.md onboarding file. This file details the MCP tools available, how to configure MCP servers, and includes optional hooks for automation. Developers can find and install these powers easily through the Kiro IDE or the kiro.dev website. Kiro Powers support curated partner tools, community contributions, and private team resources, making them versatile for different development needs.
Currently, Kiro Powers are exclusive to the Kiro IDE. However, AWS plans to expand support to other tools like Kiro CLI, Cline, Cursor, Claude Code, and more in the future. The development of these powers involves collaboration with industry leaders such as Datadog, Dynatrace, Neon, Netlify, Postman, and AWS itself. There is also an ongoing effort to involve open-source communities in enhancing these capabilities.
