Big Tech companies have been talking a lot about AI agents over the past year, but many of the promises remain in development. As the race to create useful generative AI tools heats up, these companies are now working together to create common standards. Their goal is to make AI systems more compatible and easier to connect with different data sources and platforms. This effort could shape how AI develops in the coming years.

Formation of the Agentic AI Foundation

A group of leading AI companies, including Anthropic, Block, and OpenAI, has come together to form the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF). This nonprofit organization is part of the Linux Foundation and aims to set rules for key AI technologies. The foundation will oversee the development of three main tools designed to improve how AI agents interact with data and systems.

The most prominent of these tools is the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Anthropic open-sourced MCP about a year ago, and it’s seen as a major step toward standardization. MCP acts like a universal connector, allowing AI agents to access data sources without custom integrations. The foundation hopes that MCP will become a universal “USB-C port for AI,” making it easy for developers to connect their systems to any MCP-compatible data source.

Other Key Technologies Supported by the Foundation

Alongside MCP, the AAIF is promoting two other tools: goose and AGENTS.md. These technologies are still developing, but they aim to standardize communication and documentation for AI agents. By creating common frameworks, the foundation hopes to reduce fragmentation and make it easier for different AI systems to work together.

The development of these tools is crucial because the path forward for agentic AI models is still unclear. Companies have invested heavily in building these systems, which has led to some tools gaining prominence. Standardization efforts like this could help accelerate adoption and reduce the complexity of integrating AI into various applications.

Overall, this collaboration marks a significant step toward a more unified AI ecosystem. If successful, it could lead to more interoperable AI tools and faster innovation across the industry. While challenges remain, the foundation’s work might shape the future of AI development for years to come.
