Bobyard, an innovative AI platform that streamlines construction takeoffs and estimates, has announced a successful $35 million Series A funding round. The investment was led by 8VC, with participation from Pear VC, Primary Venture Partners, Tishman Speyer, RXR, Caffeinated Capital, and Merrick Ventures. Based in San Francisco, the company has developed advanced computer-vision technology that automates up to 70% of the quantity and material takeoff process. This breakthrough allows contractors to prepare precise bids in minutes instead of hours.

Transforming Construction Estimation

Takeoffs are a critical part of preconstruction planning but are also among the most time-consuming tasks. Bobyard’s AI models interpret blueprints just like experienced estimators, converting static drawings into structured data. This process enhances speed, accuracy, and competitiveness for contractors. The company initially focused on landscaping, one of the most complex and often overlooked trades, but has quickly gained popularity among leading commercial contractors across the U.S.

Contractors using Bobyard report significant improvements. On average, takeoff times are reduced by 65%, enabling estimators to submit three to five times more bids. The platform also ensures more consistent and precise takeoffs, which directly boost win rates and margins. These benefits make Bobyard an essential tool for construction firms looking to stay competitive and efficient in a fast-paced industry.

Real Success Stories and Future Plans

One notable example is Chopper Landscaping, which used Bobyard to secure its first commercial projects. The company estimates that Bobyard helped unlock around $350,000 in new work that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. Project manager John Barrett shared that the platform cut his takeoff time “at least in half,” allowing his team to bid faster and with greater confidence.

Looking ahead, Bobyard plans to use the new funding to enhance its AI models and expand its product offerings within landscaping. The company also aims to enter additional trades such as drywall, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and framing. To support this growth, Bobyard is expanding its engineering and marketing teams in San Francisco, focused on accelerating product development and capturing new markets.

Founded by Michael Ding, a Stanford-trained engineer and award-winning mathematician, Bobyard brings together a team of computer vision experts from top institutions like Stanford, Princeton, Berkeley, and Virginia Tech. Their goal is to create applied AI solutions for one of the world’s largest and most vital industries—construction. Ding emphasizes that the company is tackling some of the toughest problems in computer vision by teaching machines to understand blueprints, pushing the boundaries of AI in shaping the built environment.
