What Makes Canva’s AI Different?

Jen Thompson, Canva’s head of product marketing, explained that design tools haven’t had a good fit-for-purpose AI model until now. The new model produces layered files that look great and can be edited by both AI and humans at the same time. Once a design is created, users can tweak it just like any other template in Canva’s editor.

Gabe Knuth, a tech analyst, said that having their own AI model gives Canva more control. It can deliver better, more consistent results that work seamlessly within Canva’s platform. This is a big step up from relying on different pre-made models for each task, which can sometimes lead to inconsistent outcomes.

Expanding AI Features Across Canva’s Platform

In addition to the layered design capabilities, Canva is making its AI tools more accessible within the app. Users can now generate content directly in the editor, without needing to switch to a different tool or part of the app. For example, they can create templates, photos, shapes, or even 3D objects on the spot.

Thompson pointed out that many users realize they need specific design elements while working in the editor. Now, Canva’s AI can help generate those elements right there in the design tab. You can also interact with the AI assistant through comments by tagging @Canva. This feature, called Ask @Canva, was previously only available through a search bar on the home screen, which was less convenient.

The AI assistant is designed to support users throughout the entire design process, offering suggestions, feedback, and edits as needed. “It’s about guiding you, not replacing your creativity,” Thompson said, emphasizing that AI is there to assist at every stage.

How Canva Stacks Up Against Competitors

Other big players like Adobe are also introducing AI tools, with plans to add features to apps like Photoshop and Express. Canva’s focus on integrated, user-friendly AI features aims to attract both individual creators and organizations.

Wayne Kurtzman, a research expert, noted that Canva’s strategy is about growing its user base by making AI features accessible across devices. The company has worked to keep the interface simple, avoiding overwhelming users with complicated options. This approach helps maintain Canva’s reputation for ease of use while expanding its capabilities.

Kurtzman also highlighted that Canva is leaning into multimedia content, which is essential for modern communication. By offering AI features that work across different formats, Canva aims to support internal and external messaging needs for organizations and individuals alike.
