What Developers Are Saying After a Major AI Service Outage

Last Wednesday, a quick but total outage hit Anthropic’s AI services, causing a ripple effect among developers. For about half an hour, tools like Claude.ai, its API, Claude Code, and the management console went offline all at once. The company quickly announced the issue and said they were working to fix it. By the time the services were back up, many developers had already felt the impact.

This outage, even though only lasting 30 minutes, made waves on tech forums and social media. Developers who depend heavily on AI tools for coding shared their frustrations and jokes. One comment on Hacker News joked that everyone would have to go back to the old days, copying and pasting from Stack Overflow. Another user joked about having to code “like a caveman” again, referencing an earlier AI outage from December 2024.

The timing was especially bad for developers in the US. Many had Claude integrated into their daily workflows. One user pointed out that outages seem to happen more often when US working hours start. In contrast, during European mornings, things tend to run smoothly. Another user noted that as soon as the US wakes up and gets busy, the AI tools start acting up again.

Some folks criticized Anthropic for reliability issues in recent months. The company’s status page showed they recognized the problem within 39 minutes of reports and said they had fixed it by 12:55 pm Eastern. They also mentioned their teams were monitoring the situation. It’s clear how much developers rely on AI tools like Claude Code, which was launched in February and became widely available in May. This tool can handle complex coding tasks and works across existing codebases.

Claude Code is a competitor to other popular AI coding assistants like OpenAI’s Codex, Google’s Gemini CLI, Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, and Cursor — a coding environment built on VS Code that also uses AI models including Claude. When the outage hit, some developers switched to alternatives like Z.AI and Qwen, which continued to work fine. Others joked about returning to old-school methods, like directly pulling code from Stack Overflow with Python scripts.

While AI coding assistants have sped up development for many, they’ve also caused headaches. A recent trend called “vibe coding” involves generating and running code through AI without fully understanding what’s happening under the hood. This has led to serious issues. For example, Google’s Gemini CLI once deleted user files while trying to reorganize them, and Replit’s AI service accidentally wiped out a live database — all because the AI misunderstood the instructions or fabricated actions. These incidents highlight the risks of relying too heavily on AI that can make mistakes or invent data.

Wednesday’s outage was a reminder that as developers depend more on AI, even small disruptions can cause big problems. But there’s a silver lining — it’s also a chance to step back and take a break. One commenter jokingly said it might be “time to go outside and touch some grass again.”
