How Generative AI Boosts Worker Productivity and Saves Time

A new study from the London School of Economics shows that workers who use generative AI tools and receive proper training can save a lot of time on their jobs. These tools, like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot, are not taking jobs away but are actually helping employees do more in less time. According to the research, using AI can free up about 7.5 hours each week, which can add up to around $18,000 in savings per worker every year.

The study surveyed roughly 3,000 employees and managers, and it found that about 70% of them are already using AI tools for work. Younger workers are leading the charge, with 71% of Gen Z users and 73% of millennials using AI. Older groups, like Gen X and Baby Boomers, also use AI but at slightly lower rates—60% and 52%, respectively.

The Main Ways People Use Generative AI at Work

Most employees are turning to AI for tasks like writing and creating content, which 43% of workers do regularly. Communication and team collaboration are also common uses, with 34% of employees relying on AI for these activities. Additionally, about 27% use AI to analyze data and create visual reports, helping them make better decisions faster.

The report doesn’t specify which AI tools are used in each case, but the most popular ones include ChatGPT and Copilot. For workers who don’t use AI, productivity gains could come simply by adopting these tools. With the right training, employees can become more confident and autonomous in using AI, which boosts efficiency across many roles.

Training and Skills Are Key to Unlocking AI’s Potential

Interestingly, around 60% of those surveyed said they hadn’t received any specific training on AI. Yet, giving employees the right skills and guidance can make a big difference. Practical, hands-on workshops tailored to different job roles are considered the most effective way to help workers adopt AI tools confidently.

Experts agree that AI is a top priority for many companies looking to increase productivity. Melanie Freeze from Gartner explains that AI saves time and allows workers to focus on more valuable, complex tasks. Kari Briski from Nvidia adds that AI-powered robots are already taking over routine and dangerous jobs in factories, freeing up human workers for more strategic work.

This shift means AI isn’t replacing workers but changing the way they work. Robots and AI systems handle boring or risky tasks, while humans can concentrate on creative, problem-solving activities. As AI continues to evolve, the focus will be on training employees to use these tools effectively and ethically, making workplaces more efficient and innovative.
