Google Integrates Gemini AI More Deeply into Workspace Apps
Google has introduced new features that embed its Gemini AI assistant directly into popular Workspace apps like Docs, Sheets, and Slides. These updates aim to make creating and editing content faster and more intuitive. By integrating AI assistance into the tools people use every day, Google hopes to streamline workflows and reduce manual work.
Enhanced Content Creation in Google Docs
One of the key updates is the “help me create” feature in Google Docs. Gemini AI can generate drafts based on user instructions by pulling information from other Workspace files such as documents, chats, and emails. Users can access this feature via a side panel or a new prompt bar at the bottom of a document.
Once a draft is generated, Gemini can also edit specific sections of the text. It can match the writing style across the entire document, which is especially helpful when multiple coworkers contribute to a project. Additionally, a “match doc” feature allows users to insert information into existing templates seamlessly.
Making Work in Sheets More Intelligent
In Sheets, Gemini AI can transform raw data into visual dashboards using simple natural language prompts. Users describe what they want, and Gemini outlines steps for approval, asking clarifying questions when needed. This turns Sheets from a basic spreadsheet tool into a collaborative partner.
Google highlights that with a single prompt, Gemini can pull relevant data from Gmail, Chat, and Drive to create formatted spreadsheets quickly. Users can also use a “fill with Gemini” function to populate cells with relevant information automatically. For example, Gemini can analyze column headers like HQ location or revenue, then search online to generate accurate data.
While these features could save time, Google acknowledges the risks of “hallucinations” — false or inaccurate information generated by AI. The company claims Gemini in Sheets has achieved near-human accuracy in tests and provides source links so users can verify data themselves.
Overall, Google is positioning Gemini as a collaborative AI assistant that helps users work smarter. By embedding AI directly into familiar tools, Google aims to improve productivity and reduce the manual effort involved in everyday tasks.
