Are AI-Infused Toys Safe for Kids or a Hidden Privacy Risk?

But as fun as they are, there are some serious questions about safety and privacy. With more companies selling these AI plushies online, parents need to know what they’re really getting into.
What Makes These AI Toys Different?
These new plush toys are not your typical stuffed animals. They have microphones, speakers, and built-in chatbots that can talk with children. The most well-known one is made by a Silicon Valley startup called Curio. They even have a voice actor, Claire “Grimes” Boucher, lending her voice to one of the toys named Grok. These toys cost around $100 each and look adorable, but there’s more beneath the surface.
Curio claims that their toys are powered by a special AI, trained on OpenAI’s API and conversations from Discord. The idea is to create a friendly, interactive experience for kids. However, the company’s privacy policy raises eyebrows. It admits that several big tech platforms, including Microsoft Azure and OpenAI, might collect or store data from children using the toys. That conflicts with Curio’s claims that they only review interactions with parental permission. This inconsistency has raised concerns among privacy watchdogs and experts.
Less Transparent and Even Riskier Options
While Curio is trying to position itself as a safer choice, there are many other AI plush toys sold by lesser-known brands. Some of these companies operate with even less transparency. For example, one called Little Learners has a very low Trustpilot rating and offers almost no info about their AI technology. They seem to use generic graphics and don’t explain how their chatbots work or what data they collect.
Another brand, FoloToy, appears to be somewhat more open. They claim to use over 20 different large language models from companies like OpenAI, Google, and others, including some based in China. But their privacy policy is vague and mentions a company called Astroship, which builds websites and apps, not AI toys. This makes it hard to know who’s really behind these products and how they handle kids’ data. The policy even has awkward, AI-like language asking users to contact them if they have questions—without providing a proper contact method.
Why Are These Toys a Cause for Concern?
There’s a long history of AI chatbots causing trouble. Some chatbots have led kids to share personal info, become obsessed, or even experience distress from interactions that aren’t properly monitored. Privacy issues are just as troubling. When companies don’t clearly explain how they’re handling children’s data or if they’re sharing it with third parties, it’s risky to trust them.
Experts say it’s too soon to introduce such advanced AI into toys for children. Kids can’t make informed choices about privacy or safety. They lack the understanding and agency adults have. Given how many AI models have been linked to harmful or invasive practices, putting these toys in children’s hands seems premature at best. It’s especially concerning when companies hide or obscure what they’re doing with the data collected from young users.
Overall, while AI toys might seem like the future of play, we need to think twice. Transparency, safety, and privacy should come first. Parents should be cautious about trusting these toys until there’s clearer regulation and accountability. After all, today’s children are growing up in a world where AI is everywhere, and how we handle their data now will shape their future experiences with technology.
