Since then, AI has made big strides, especially in areas like machine learning. These systems can automatically tune their parameters to improve performance, such as playing complex games or designing new algorithms.

More recently, developments like AutoML have automated parts of AI development, making it easier to build and train neural networks. Large language models, or LLMs, like GPT and Claude, can generate code and even help create future versions of themselves. For example, GPT-5.3‑Codex reportedly helped in debugging and managing its own training process, with humans still overseeing the work.

The Current State of AI Self-Improvement

While AI systems are becoming more capable of generating and testing new ideas, they still rely heavily on human input. Humans set goals, evaluate results, and decide which changes to keep.
