How AI is Transforming Enterprise Commerce on Shopify

Shopify is taking a big step forward by integrating advanced AI into its core commerce systems. This new approach aims to automate routines and open up new sales channels. While AI has often been used for customer support chatbots or simple content tasks, Shopify’s latest updates push it into a more active role in managing and shaping commerce experiences.

Introducing Agentic Storefronts

The most notable change is the launch of ‘Agentic Storefronts’. Instead of just directing customers to a website, merchants can now have their products showcased directly within AI-powered conversations on platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. This means products can be discovered and purchased within these chat environments without needing to visit a traditional online store.

This shift impacts how brands engage with customers. Instead of complex integrations for each platform, products configured in Shopify’s admin are instantly discoverable by these AI agents. When a customer makes a purchase through a conversation, the transaction data is sent back to Shopify’s main system for tracking and attribution. This helps brands stay visible even as search behaviors move toward large language models and AI assistants.

Enhancing Operations with AI Sidekicks

Shopify’s AI assistant, called ‘Sidekick’, is evolving from a reactive support tool into a proactive operations helper. The latest updates let Sidekick handle more complex tasks automatically. For example, it can now suggest product bundles based on what customers are adding to their carts or identify issues like missing return policies.

This new functionality reduces the workload for technical teams by automating routine tasks. Non-technical staff can also build custom tools using simple natural language prompts, making it easier to adapt workflows without needing developer help. Additionally, Shopify now allows users to save and share automated prompts called ‘skills’, which standardizes how teams use AI across large organizations.

Another challenge in enterprise retail is testing updates without risking live sales. Shopify is tackling this with new tools like ‘SimGym’ and ‘Rollouts’. These use AI shopper agents to simulate real customer behavior, allowing merchants to test changes safely before going live. Although still in research preview, these tools aim to make deployment smoother and more reliable.

Overall, Shopify’s move toward agentic AI marks a significant shift in how online commerce is managed. By embedding AI deeply into both storefronts and operations, the platform is helping merchants modernize their business practices and better meet customer expectations in an increasingly AI-driven world.
