The key innovation here is the checkout process. Using the Agentic Commerce Protocol, Instacart processes payments directly inside ChatGPT. The transaction uses Stripe’s secure credit card flow, so users can pay without switching apps or pages. This creates a smoother shopping journey from start to finish.

Deeper Collaboration and Real-World Testing

Instacart isn’t just using the new tech—they helped shape it. The company was an early contributor to OpenAI’s research preview on Operator technology. This collaboration allowed Instacart to test how AI can handle complex, real-world data, such as tens of thousands of products and fluctuating stock levels across many stores.

This partnership helped define how an AI agent interacts with fulfillment logistics. Instacart’s involvement ensured that the technology could navigate real shopping environments, making the AI responses more accurate and reliable.
